Overview:

The Cargo Operations Specialist is tasked with the critical role of managing the secure loading and unloading of various types of cargo from vessels and trains. This includes handling containers, bulk materials, breakbulk items, and other freight in a safe, efficient, and responsible manner. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

Candidate Qualifications:

  • Minimum of one year of experience in a customer-facing role.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English; proficiency in Spanish is advantageous.
  • High school diploma or equivalent educational background.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License.
  • Must hold a TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential).
  • Reliable transportation to and from the workplace.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team setting.
  • Willingness to travel as required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Work is conducted entirely outdoors.
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions, including heat, rain, and cold, is expected. Occasional work in confined spaces may be required.
  • Physical capabilities must include walking, bending, stooping, and climbing ladders up to 100 feet high, along with quick reflexes.
  • Ability to function in a noisy work environment.

Position Responsibilities:

The Cargo Operations Specialist is responsible for:

  • Reporting directly to the Gang Foreman.
  • Having prior experience in cargo operations is preferred.
  • Performing duties outdoors at the terminal.
  • Utilizing verbal communication or hand signals for effective coordination.
  • Instructing Yard Hustler Drivers on the precise positioning of equipment for optimal loading and unloading.
  • Communicating via handheld radio as necessary.
  • Handling tools and lashing materials as required.
  • Engaging and disengaging automatic locks weighing 13 lbs. that secure containers during transport.
  • Managing the placement or removal of dunnage and other materials as needed.
  • Maintaining a safe distance from moving tracks and equipment.
  • Using a push broom to clear debris to designated areas.
  • Placing ISO fittings as required.
  • Hooking and unhooking lifting gear as necessary.
