Job Title: Patient Observation Assistant

Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled Patient Observation Assistant to join our team at Compass Group Careers. As a Patient Observation Assistant, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our patients.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide visual and audible observation of assigned patients under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) and unit manager.
  • Complete observation reports at established intervals.
  • Take initiative in compassionately rendering service or responding to needs, interacting hospitably, cheerfully, and supportively with staff, patients, visitors, and work colleagues.
  • Remain at the bedside of assigned patients at all times unless relieved by an appropriate staff member.
  • Verbally redirect patients from engaging in at-risk behaviors.
  • Seek help or advice as soon as possible when patients appear to be in medical distress or pose a threat, and escalate to assigned medical professionals.
  • Participate in collaborative identification and reporting of patient safety issues, ensuring the patient environment is safe and reporting any safety hazards to the charge nurse.
  • Assist in calming and/or reorienting patients in cases of agitation or confusion.
  • Assist with keeping patients' rooms safe and orderly.
  • Accompany patients when diagnostic testing is required.
  • Immediately summon nursing staff if patients require assistance, control, or other nursing interventions, or exhibit unusual behavior or verbalizations.
  • Participate in hand-off of pertinent information/behavior about assigned patients when arriving on the unit and upon completion of shift assignment.
  • Assist patients with ordering dietary trays and setting up patient meal trays; assist with basic positioning of patients; assist with patient wheelchair rides and/or ambulation if patients are stable and gait has been previously determined safe by assigned staff nurses.
  • Respond rapidly and thoroughly to emergencies, special needs, etc.
  • Accept suggestions and direction from supervisors and hospital staff.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of department policies and procedures, honoring department's attendance, break, behavior, dress, personal hygiene, and safety codes.
  • Honor all confidentiality and other regulatory requirements.
  • Accept and absorb department and hospital education programs.
  • Assist other associates as necessary, responding to direction as provided.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent is required.
  • Current CPR AED or basic life Support healthcare provider (BLS-HCP) certification required within 30 days of hire, if required at the facility.
  • Ability to walk or stand for prolonged periods, requiring bending, stooping, reaching up, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • One to two years of previous experience is preferred.
