The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a prominent urban school district recognized nationally, serving around 22,000 students who speak over 60 different languages at home. With a comprehensive educational structure including Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, we rank as the fifth largest district in Kansas. Our diverse student body consists of approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian. To support our students, the district employs around 4,000 staff members, including over 1,800 educators.

PURPOSE:

The Educational Audiologist will concentrate on assisting students with hearing impairments within an educational framework. This role involves assessing students' hearing, listening, and auditory processing challenges that may hinder their academic performance, communication skills, and overall well-being. The audiologist collaborates with the special education team and local school district to evaluate each child referred for support, adhering to best practices and ethical standards set by professional organizations and Kansas State Law.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Acts as a vital member of a multidisciplinary team to address the hearing needs of children and students aged 3-21.
  • Provides diagnostic evaluations to assess hearing and auditory processing capabilities, determining the necessity for amplification and eligibility for assistive hearing technology.
  • Engages in the Individual Education Plan process to formulate educational recommendations, including communication accommodations and transition planning assistance.
  • Contributes to the development and execution of goals aimed at enhancing auditory skills.
  • Offers guidance to parents and students regarding audiological assessments, the impact of hearing loss, and the benefits of amplification.
  • Consults on the selection, acquisition, installation, maintenance, and calibration of audiometric equipment.
  • Collaborates with classroom teachers and school personnel to address the specific needs of students with hearing loss and educational management strategies.
  • Demonstrates the ability to coordinate hearing healthcare services with families, schools, medical professionals, and community resources.
  • Organizes identification programs utilizing age-appropriate methods and provides screening support for preschool initiatives.
  • Trains and supervises support staff in administering screening programs and monitoring hearing instruments.
  • Maintains precise written records and fulfills necessary documentation requirements.
  • Performs additional related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's or Doctoral degree in Audiology from an accredited institution.

Valid Kansas Audiology license.

Meets the criteria for the Certificate of Clinical Competence.

A minimum of 2 years of clinical or educational audiology experience.

Willingness to travel between school locations.

Optional: Kansas License in Fitting and Dispensing of Hearing Instruments

COMMUNICATION/ORGANIZATION:

Maintains effective communication with school staff and parents/guardians to foster collaborative efforts that address students' educational needs.

Effectively utilizes available technology in performing job responsibilities.

REASONING ABILITY: Possesses the capability to solve practical issues and navigate various concrete variables in situations with limited standardization. Able to interpret diverse instructions presented in written, oral, diagrammatic, or scheduled formats.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Capable of effectively conveying information and responding to inquiries from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, and the public.

While fulfilling job responsibilities, the employee is regularly required to sit, walk, stand, and communicate verbally or audibly. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 pounds. The employee may also need to push items weighing 50 pounds, such as a bike or wheelchair, or rearrange furniture. During the course of the job, the employee may visit students' homes. Specific vision abilities required for this position include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, and the community; ability to communicate clearly and concisely in both written and oral formats.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 186 days + 10 extra duty days

SALARY: Based on KCKPS Salary Schedule

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

REPORT TO: Special Education Coordinator

EVALUATION: Performance in this role will be assessed in accordance with the Board's policy on Evaluation and Professional Personnel.
