GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT MAINE WARDEN SERVICE:

The Maine Warden Service has a rich history dating back to 1880, tasked with enforcing laws that protect Maine's wildlife. Today, it operates as a modern, professional law enforcement agency with a team of 124 certified officers equipped with advanced tools and technology to ensure public safety and resource protection.

GAME WARDEN JOB DESCRIPTION:

This role involves certified, uniformed law enforcement duties as part of the Maine Warden Service, focusing on the protection of inland fish and wildlife resources and public safety. Responsibilities include:
  • Patrolling designated districts, often independently, to monitor hunting, fishing, and trapping activities. Wardens inspect licenses and wildlife possession, providing guidance on relevant laws and regulations.
  • Issuing warnings, summonses, and making arrests as necessary, with the authority to enforce all state laws.
  • Conducting investigations, gathering evidence, writing reports, and testifying in court regarding law violations.
  • Investigating incidents related to hunting and recreational vehicle accidents.
  • Participating in search and rescue operations, which may involve recovering drowning victims.
  • Collaborating with biologists, animal control agents, and wildlife rehabilitators.
To excel as a Maine Game Warden, candidates must possess extensive knowledge of wildlife, hunting, fishing, and trapping, alongside a strong commitment to law enforcement and a willingness to work outdoors in varying conditions. Promoting positive public relations and compliance with regulations is essential.

PREFERENCES:

Preference will be given to candidates with an active Certification of Eligibility for Law Enforcement or those who have completed the Law Enforcement Pre-Service training.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO APPLY:

Applicants must:
  • Hold a high school diploma or equivalent;
  • Be at least 21 years old, or 20 years old with an associate degree or 60 credit hours of post-secondary education;
  • Have successfully passed the Maine Criminal Justice Academy's ALERT examination;
  • Have successfully passed the Pre-Employment Physical Fitness Test within a year of application;
  • Possess or be able to obtain a valid Maine Class C motor vehicle operator's license;
  • Be willing to relocate anywhere within the State of Maine.

TESTING AND EVALUATION PROCESS:

The selection process for Game Wardens is comprehensive, involving multiple evaluation phases to assess each applicant's qualifications thoroughly. Current full-time Maine State Law Enforcement Officers may be exempt from certain components of the application process.
