Position Overview:

The Medical Lab Technician (MLT) is responsible for conducting both routine and specialized laboratory analyses to support the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of various health conditions. Working under the guidance of a medical laboratory scientist or laboratory manager, the MLT ensures the precision and dependability of laboratory results.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Sample Collection and Processing: Gather, prepare, and process diverse specimen types, including blood, urine, and other bodily fluids, while ensuring proper handling and storage to preserve sample integrity.
  • Testing and Analysis: Execute routine and specialized tests on specimens utilizing both automated analyzers and manual methodologies. Testing areas may encompass hematology, microbiology, chemistry, immunology, and serology.
  • Quality Control: Implement quality control measures and calibrate laboratory instruments to guarantee the accuracy and reliability of test outcomes. Follow established protocols to uphold quality standards.
  • Result Interpretation: Evaluate test findings and compare them against reference ranges. Report any abnormal or unexpected results to the supervising medical personnel or laboratory manager.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of test results and ensure that laboratory documentation complies with regulatory standards and institutional policies.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Conduct routine maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory instruments. Notify the laboratory supervisor of any equipment issues or repair requirements.
  • Safety and Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols to maintain a secure working environment. Follow infection control practices and comply with regulatory guidelines, including OSHA and CLIA standards.
  • Communication: Collaborate with healthcare professionals, including physicians and nurses, to discuss test results and provide necessary information. Foster effective communication with laboratory colleagues to contribute to a supportive team atmosphere.

Qualifications:
Education:
  • Associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or a related field from an accredited institution.

Certification:
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by a recognized certifying body, such as the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or the American Medical Technologists (AMT).

Experience: A minimum of three years of experience as a Medical Lab Technician is preferred, with experience in a clinical laboratory setting being advantageous.

Skills:
  • Proficiency in performing laboratory tests and operating laboratory equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in test results.
  • Excellent organizational and documentation skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift moderate weights.
  • Manual dexterity and the capacity to perform repetitive tasks.

Working Conditions:
  • Work in a clinical laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards.
  • May require occasional weekend or evening shifts based on laboratory needs.
