Evaluates vehicle damage to establish repair costs for insurance settlements.
Collision Repair Estimator - Key Responsibilities
- Inspects damaged vehicles to assess the extent of structural, body, mechanical, or interior damage.
- Calculates labor and parts costs necessary to repair or replace each damaged component.
- Discusses repair cost estimates with the body shop manager or foreman.
- If disagreements arise regarding repair costs, coordinates with another appraiser for an independent assessment.
- Assesses the feasibility of repairing versus replacing parts such as bumpers, fenders, and doors.
- Evaluates the practicality of repairs compared to the vehicle's market value prior to the accident.
- Determines salvage value in cases of total vehicle loss.
- Completes insurance documentation to outline repair cost estimates and recommendations.
- Estimates costs for repainting, modifications for special purposes, or customizing undamaged vehicles.

Collision Repair Estimator - Qualifications

Collision Repair Estimator - Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED); or one to three months of related experience and/or training; or a combination of education and experience.
- One-year certificate from a college or technical school; or three to six months of related experience and/or training; or a combination of education and experience.
- Associate degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year of related experience and/or training; or a combination of education and experience.
- Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university; or one to two years of related experience and/or training; or a combination of education and experience.
- Two to four years of related experience and/or training; or a combination of education and experience.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate effectively before groups of customers or employees.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
