Position Overview

ROLE SUMMARY:

The Substance Misuse Specialist will deliver comprehensive psychotherapy services (both in-person and via telehealth) to a varied student demographic, with a strong emphasis on substance misuse expertise.

This role entails conducting diagnostic evaluations, providing crisis intervention, and offering brief, goal-oriented counseling for individuals, couples, and groups addressing a spectrum of psychological and developmental issues, particularly those related to substance misuse.

The Specialist will engage in the multifaceted operations of a university counseling center, including initial assessments, individual and couples therapy, consultation/on-call duties, outreach initiatives, and supervision and training responsibilities.

Collaboration with the Assistant Director for Substance Misuse Prevention at the Emory University Center for Student Wellbeing is essential to deliver clinical insights and support for substance misuse prevention initiatives across the campus.

Participation in campus-wide committees is expected, along with consulting and referring to campus partners and community agencies to ensure integrated care.

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is part of the Health, Wellbeing, Access, and Prevention portfolio, which encompasses the Center for Student Wellbeing, Office of Respect, and Student Health Services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver culturally sensitive, high-quality, evidence-based individual, couples, and group psychotherapy to a diverse student population. Provide crisis intervention, assessments, brief interventions, and consultations for students with various clinical concerns, including those mandated or voluntarily seeking assistance for substance use issues.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule for after-hours consultations regarding urgent mental health needs of students.
  • Design, implement, and adjust clinical treatment plans related to substance misuse, utilizing evidence-based practices within a brief, goal-oriented framework.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director for Substance Misuse Prevention to support strategic planning and execution of programs aimed at the prevention, education, and assessment of alcohol and drug misuse on campus.
  • Coordinate treatment and communication with campus partners (e.g., Student Health Services, Office of Respect, Center for Student Wellbeing) and external agencies to ensure appropriate care for students based on their needs.
  • Act as a resource for CAPS staff regarding substance use and abuse issues.
  • Foster relationships that enhance CAPS' service development in the area of substance use.
  • Maintain connections between CAPS and relevant stakeholders in this field.
  • Comply with agency standards for case management, documentation, and service scope.
  • Engage actively as a team member in meetings, multicultural seminars, case conferences, professional development, and other organizational gatherings; consult with colleagues and supervisors as needed.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master's degree in counseling, social work, psychology, or a related field from an accredited institution, along with two years of full-time experience in alcohol and drug assessments and interventions.
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure in the state of Georgia, with the expectation to obtain licensure within 12 months of starting. Certification in substance abuse treatment (e.g., CAADC, CSAC) is required within 6 months of commencement.
  • Demonstrated commitment to multicultural humility and providing clinical services to diverse populations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills necessary for effective interaction with students, medical professionals, faculty, and other university community members.

This position may require evening and weekend work.
