Key Responsibilities:

  • Enforce animal ordinances and state laws to ensure public safety and animal welfare.
  • Investigate animal cruelty cases and provide evidence to support prosecution.
  • Control and care for stray and abandoned animals, including providing food, water, and shelter.
  • Respond to complaints about dangerous or vicious dogs and take necessary action to ensure public safety.
  • Provide clerical tasks, answer phone calls, and log information related to animal services.
  • Issue warnings and citations to individuals who violate animal ordinances.
  • Investigate dog and cat bites or attacks, animal cruelty, and hoarding cases.
  • Trap and eradicate nuisance wildlife.
  • Perform euthanasia of animals and maintain records.
  • Respond to emergency calls after hours and provide 1st responder care to injured animals.
  • Maintain quarantined animals for health department officials.
  • Testify in court on animal cases.
  • Provide 1st responder care to injured animals in the field.
  • Handle livestock problems.
  • Operate a city vehicle to perform essential functions.

Requirements:

  • Mental alertness and adaptability to office and field area work routines.
  • Equivalent to four years of high school or GED, with particular emphasis in office skills, shop skills, or others, plus 12 to 18 months of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions in person-to-person and small group situations.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to prepare and interpret bar graphs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ACIC certification.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • ALETA law enforcement graduate.

Working Conditions:

The Animal Services Officer will work in a fast-paced environment with frequent exposure to outdoor weather conditions, moving mechanical parts, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Physical Demands:

The Animal Services Officer will be required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl frequently. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and continuously lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
