Join Salt Lake City's Public Lands team as we seek a highly skilled Trails and Natural Lands Director to lead our efforts in managing and preserving our natural areas. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for overseeing the management of our natural areas, including riparian areas, foothill natural areas, and nature preserves.

About the Position

This critical role will play a key part in providing strategic leadership to the Department of Public Lands, helping us achieve our mission and goals outlined in the Reimagine Nature Master Plan. You will work closely with our team to develop operational work plans, communicate complex projects, and foster a positive team culture.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and coordinate all City Trails and Natural Lands Division functions, including acquisition, management, promotion, preservation, protection, enhancement, and disposal of open space lands.
  • Hire and manage staff within the Division, including Operations supervisor, Recreational Trails Manager, Restoration Ecologist, Natural Resource Technicians, and seasonal staff.
  • Develop operational management plans on City-owned land and coordinate the implementation of the Public Lands Reimagine Nature Master Plan and other associated internal planning documents.
  • Establish relationships and maintain communications with local community leaders and interest groups, and implement land planning efforts with sister City agencies, county government, the federal government, local tribal leaders, and local communities.
  • Participate in staff preparation of presentations, public meetings, and hearings aimed at discussing management of the Trails and Natural Land Division, and assist staff in negotiations with interest groups.
  • Process Improvement: Develop, amend, and maintain processes and procedures associated with acquisition of open space and development of an open space acquisition plan, and oversee and manage Open Space disposition, conservation easements, utility easements, encroachments, and establishing formal processes to strengthen protection and oversight.
  • Responsible for fund raising and securing funds outside the City for open space acquisition projects through grants, partnerships, donations, requests, or other means available by law.
  • Reviews and analyzes pertinent data from academic and professional sources, performs research, assists in the identification of land for possible park and open space, and reviews existing and proposed uses in the area to improve consistent and prioritized management of Natural Lands.
  • Coordinates the preparation and ongoing update of a City Natural Lands Inventory Map that includes open space property within the City, outside City limits, or any property contributed or acquired by the City for the purposes of preserving, developing, or restoring open space land.
  • Budget Management & Analysis: Assists with preparation and administration of the Division's budget and other financial activities, performs financial analysis on projects, as needed, to ensure proper accounting of costs and benchmarks for completion, and manages and prepares all budgets associated with the Foothill Natural Area program, Natural Lands Program, and Habitat Restoration program budgets.
Requirements

We are seeking a highly qualified candidate with a bachelor's degree in Natural Resource Management, Parks, Recreation and Tourism, Public Administration, Urban Planning, Geography, Earth Sciences, or a related field, plus four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in land conservation, open space management, and park planning and development.

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to coordinate the work of others and communicate effectively with individuals of diverse backgrounds and professional levels. They will also have working knowledge of contract administration related to municipal projects, experience in managing professional consultants' contracts, and a proven record of achieving project objectives within specified budgetary constraints.
