Position Overview

New Oakland Family Centers is dedicated to delivering extensive behavioral health and substance abuse solutions for individuals throughout Michigan, encompassing both outpatient and partial hospitalization frameworks.

Work Schedule: Full-time; Shift-based hours as determined by the Crisis Services Director. The role involves three 12-hour shifts weekly, specifically from 7 PM to 7 AM.

Reporting Structure: Reports directly to the President / Director of Crisis Services / Supervisor of Crisis Services.

Compensation: Hourly position, with pay commensurate to experience.

Role Summary: The Youth and Family Care Connection (YFCC) Technician is a full-time role that encompasses various clinical and administrative duties within the Crisis Services Program. This position is situated in a children’s short-term crisis stabilization unit that operates around the clock. The technician will collaborate closely with both clinical and administrative personnel, as well as consumers of diverse backgrounds, with a primary focus on children, to guarantee safe, effective, and efficient care.

Key Skills Required:

  • Proficient in crisis de-escalation and resolution techniques.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of behavioral management and de-escalation strategies.
  • Ability to evaluate situations to ascertain significance, urgency, and risks, making prompt decisions that prioritize the welfare of the consumer and the program.
  • Capacity to maintain composure and collaborate effectively in crisis scenarios.
  • Experience working within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conduct regular safety assessments and continuous monitoring of consumers in the unit, eliminating any hazardous items and documenting findings as required.
  • Foster a secure and supportive environment that emphasizes respect, diversity, acceptance, and compassion.
  • Respond to critical incidents that may necessitate restrictive interventions as instructed.
  • Monitor safety concerns regarding consumers and take necessary actions to avert harm, communicating these issues as needed.
  • Remain present in consumer care areas whenever feasible to assist both consumers and colleagues.
  • Support consumers with daily living activities and promote independent behavior through appropriate interventions.
  • Recognize verbal and non-verbal signals indicative of potential aggressive behavior and employ necessary interventions to de-escalate situations effectively.
  • Engage with consumers daily to aid them in achieving milieu objectives.
  • Manage any crisis situations that may arise, including CPI-approved physical interventions or CPR if required.
  • Oversee meal times and snacks, sharing meals with consumers in the stabilization unit.
  • Complete documentation and records in accordance with agency policies and role requirements.
  • Adhere to rotation schedules, including both milieu and monitoring of consumers until under the supervision of a parent or legal guardian.
  • Communicate daily with Crisis Services staff regarding clinical and administrative matters.
  • Perform light cleaning duties, including laundry and sanitation of bodily functions while consumers are present in the stabilization unit (i.e., urine, feces, emesis, etc.). Maintain daily tidiness of the milieu and replenish supplies as necessary.
  • Comply with all agency policies and procedures, including attendance and punctuality standards, as well as fulfilling all initial and ongoing training requirements.
  • Actively engage as a constructive member of the clinic environment.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications: A high school diploma or equivalent is mandatory. A Bachelor’s or Pre-bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, or counseling is preferred. One to two years of experience in crisis work is highly desirable. Must demonstrate the ability to work effectively with diverse populations, including children.

Work Environment: Staff should be prepared to operate in an acute, secured crisis unit. The work setting is that of a crisis center, which may expose staff to behavioral and medical situations that could pose physical risks. Active involvement with clients is essential, and staff may occasionally need to employ approved CPI techniques or pursue clients who attempt to leave. The role may require extended periods of standing, moving, and bending, and the ability to lift up to 25 pounds as necessary.
