KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Foster Care Support Specialist provides essential services to children in Foster Care and their families, ensuring their protection and stability while assisting families in creating and executing successful reunification plans. The Specialist reports to the Foster Care Supervisor.
  • Assist with the intake, placement, and transition of children referred by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS).
  • Develop, implement, document, and review behavioral goals and service delivery methods as outlined in a Parent Agency Agreement.
  • Monitor and document progress related to behavioral goals and objectives in the service plan.
  • Maintain a manageable caseload ratio of 13:1.
  • Participate in case review meetings, staff meetings, and professional development conferences.
  • Provide referrals for family and individual counseling in line with the service plan.
  • Consult regularly with community services and interagency programs to enhance client service and make appropriate referrals.
  • Offer crisis intervention and case management services to children, families, and foster parents.
  • Advocate for clients and coordinate with other agencies to ensure access to necessary services and arrange transportation as needed.
  • Document efforts made towards achieving a timely permanency plan for the child.
  • Prepare required reports for MDHHS and the legal system following prescribed guidelines.
  • Explore alternative placements with family members or kinship care to ensure the least restrictive environment for the child.
  • Facilitate aftercare services when a child returns to family care or becomes a Permanent Ward to ensure stability.
  • Assist in support groups for foster parents, birth parents, and kinship or sibling groups.
  • Represent the agency positively.
  • Engage in outreach and recruitment efforts.
  • Incorporate principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion in all work processes and job functions, promoting a sense of belonging and acceptance for all clients and staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
DOES THIS SOUND LIKE YOU?
  • Master's or bachelor's degree in social work or a related field.
  • Demonstrated understanding of separation and loss issues related to the foster care population.
  • Successful completion of Child Welfare Training Institute (CWTI) training is required.
  • Flexibility in work schedule to meet the needs of the agency and program.
  • Sensitivity to the diversity of the agency's service population, including cultural, racial, religious, gender, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic differences.
  • Special abilities and skills necessary to fulfill the required tasks and meet the agency's needs will also be considered.
  • While employees may use the Agency vehicle fleet for business purposes and are covered under our insurance, they must provide documentation of personal vehicle liability insurance with minimum coverage of $100,000 per person/$300,000 per incident, as well as a valid driver's license and proof of registration annually. In some cases, a chauffeur's license may be required (can be obtained within sixty days of hire).
