Salary Range:
Lecturer A/2 Full-Time Equivalent Salary Range: $5,007 - $6,359 per month
Lecturer B/3 Full-Time Equivalent Salary Range: $5,925 - $12,594 per month
Lecturer C/4 Full-Time Equivalent Salary Range: $6,500 - $13,831 per month
Lecturer D/5 Full-Time Equivalent Salary Range: $8,184 - $14,487 per month
The anticipated hiring range is typically at or near the minimum of the appropriate salary range, based on education and experience. Most new lecturers are appointed at the Lecturer A or B rank.
Position Summary:
The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies is gathering application materials for a pool of lecturers, with positions available based on departmental needs throughout the academic year. Appointments from this lecturer pool are temporary and often made shortly before the academic term begins.
The department generally seeks part-time lecturers for the following general education courses:
- GEOG 101: Earth Systems and Physical Geography
- GEOG 102: Peoples, Places, and Environments
- GEOG 105: California Cultural Landscapes
- GEOG 106: The American West
- GEOG 301W: Global Economic Geography
- GEOG 303: Geography and World Affairs
- GEOG 304: Sustainability and Climate Change Issues
- GEOG 305: Mobile, Wired, and Tracked: Our Digital Planet
- GEOG 320: Introduction to Land Use Planning
- GEOG 352: The United States
- GEOG 427: Environmental Impact Analysis
A Master's degree or higher in Geography or a closely related field from an accredited institution is required by the time of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Candidates with prior undergraduate teaching experience in Geography, especially in lower-division courses, laboratory settings, and/or online formats are preferred. Bilingual candidates will receive preference.
Responsibilities:
Lecturer roles in the department include responsibilities such as developing course content, teaching, grading, holding office hours, and creating syllabi. Familiarity with a learning management system (Canvas) is required. Teaching assignments will be determined based on individual qualifications and departmental needs.

Department Overview:
The department offers two Bachelor of Arts degrees, four minors, and two certificates. Our dedicated faculty and staff support students in impactful learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom. Many courses address sustainability and climate resilience topics, including wildfire management, ecosystem health, food systems, civic engagement, urban development, and environmental policy. The department features a modern computer lab for geospatial technology and provides applied field opportunities at the University's ecological reserve.
