Job Title: Environmental Scientist

Job Summary:

The Department of Fish and Wildlife is seeking an Environmental Scientist to join our team in the North Central Region Chico Field Office. As an Environmental Scientist, you will play a critical role in the conservation and management of spring-run Chinook salmon in the Central Valley of California.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct salmon population monitoring and survival studies in the Sacramento River Watershed.
  • Review and analyze data to inform management decisions.
  • Develop and write scientific reports and documents.
  • Present scientific data to the public and stakeholders.
  • Represent the Department on technical teams and in meetings.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with stakeholders, including other Department staff, state and federal agencies, and interested parties.

Working Conditions:

This position requires both office and field work. Office work includes use of a computer keyboard and Microsoft office software, as well as sitting for several hours a day. Field work may include hiking long distances in rugged terrain, working outdoors in various weather conditions, and in and around cold and fast-moving water. A valid Class C driver's license is required, and you will regularly operate motorized boats, drive State vehicles, tow trailers, and drive on roads requiring use of 4-wheel drive.

Requirements:

  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Travel to perform field work throughout the State.
  • Work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Work in and around water, including wading and snorkeling.
  • Wear a uniform.
  • Operate boats and tow trailers daily.

Benefits:

This is a 12-month Limited Term (LT) position, which may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent. As a State employee, you will receive full health, dental, and vision benefits, as well as State Service and accrue monthly leave credits.
