Job Overview:


The Phlebotomy Technician I plays a crucial role in the accurate collection of patient specimens for laboratory analysis within a professional healthcare setting.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Conducts phlebotomy procedures (venipuncture, fingerstick, heelstick) in accordance with established protocols. Verifies patient identity using two identifiers and ensures accurate labeling of specimens and containers.
  2. Assesses the urgency of specimen collections (STAT, Routine, ASAP, etc.) and processes specimens in the laboratory using computerized systems, including preparation, centrifugation, and routing to reference labs. Guarantees timely transport and processing of all specimens.
  3. Manages patient lab reports, requisitions, and billing for the business office, ensuring accurate posting of charges and reconciliation of invoices. Investigates complex billing issues and resolves discrepancies in patient orders while maintaining accurate demographic data.
  4. Handles complex specimen setups, enters intricate orders and results, and ensures proper packing and shipping of infectious materials. Communicates any special circumstances regarding specimens or testing to relevant staff and management.
  5. Maintains laboratory equipment, including centrifuges and refrigerators, ensuring proper functionality and cleanliness. Monitors daily temperatures of refrigeration units in phlebotomy areas and manages inventory of supplies to ensure efficient operation.
  6. Assists in training new staff and students, while also performing reception duties such as greeting patients and answering phone inquiries. Responsible for patient registration, test ordering, and specimen processing as necessary.
  7. Documents and communicates information thoroughly and accurately, adhering to departmental guidelines for equipment usage and maintenance. Evaluates inventory levels and assists with inventory control as needed.
  8. Ensures a clean and organized work environment, properly disposing of waste and restocking supplies as necessary. Maintains cleanliness in washroom facilities.
  9. Promotes the mission, vision, and values of SCL Health, adhering to service behavior standards.
  10. Performs additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Certification from an accredited body such as RPT, AMT, ASCP, NCCT, NAPT, NHA, NPA, ACA, ASPT, or NHCO is mandatory.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • At least six months of laboratory experience is preferred.

Physical Requirements:


Engagement with patients, their families, and healthcare providers requires effective verbal communication and comprehension of spoken information.

Ability to operate computers and delicate laboratory equipment with precision, necessitating dexterity and hand-eye coordination.

Visual acuity to read equipment, labels, monitors, and documentation is essential.

Physical stamina to transport phlebotomy equipment and remain standing for extended periods is required.

Ability to adjust body posture, including bending, to perform phlebotomy tasks effectively.


Work Schedule:
Weekend shifts with potential for additional hours as needed.
