Job Summary

This role serves as key office personnel who interacts daily with the public, city employees, inspectors, plans examiners, and the building official. The ideal candidate will possess excellent customer service, organizational, and multitasking skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interface with customers to service their building department-related needs.
  • Issue and/or track permits through the permitting process, from application acceptance to permit closure.
  • Maintain organized systems for files, letters, reference manuals, field inspection reports, permit files, blueprints, drawings, and other data or materials.
  • Collaborate with plan examiners and inspectors to develop and ensure consistent processes.
  • Assist with public record requests.
  • Collect permit fees, complete daily cash collection sheets, and deposit collected fees in a safe.
  • Perform skilled secretarial functions, provide administrative support, prepare correspondence, reports, and documentation, and update, scan, and maintain departmental records and files.
  • Be available to work additional hours, weekends, or holidays with little to no advance notice.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required; a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field is desired.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience performing similar duties/tasks.
  • Minimum typing speed of 50 WPM.

  • Ability to positively interact with staff members, the public, contractors, governmental entities, and other clientele.
  • Good time management, organization, telephone communication skills, attention to detail, and people skills.
  • Ability to perform multi-task operations with frequent interruptions.
  • Perform a variety of duties requiring critical thinking, independent judgment, and technical knowledge.
  • Self-motivated and takes initiative.
  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills and permitting software experience are essential.
Certification and Experience
  • Obtain ICC Permit Technician certification within one year of hire.
  • Working in a construction environment/company is a plus.
