About the Position

This is an exciting opportunity to join the team at Military Treatment Facilities under DHA as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for performing and interpreting a variety of standard, complex, and specialized procedures and tests within the Core laboratory section.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform and interpret a variety of standard, complex, and specialized procedures and tests within the Core laboratory section.
  • Accept referrals of abnormal or unusual results from lower graded laboratory personnel and advise on steps to be taken to verify initial results or achieve verifiable data.
  • Perform or assist with performing competency assessments or training validation. Provide continuing education for laboratory and hospital staff.
  • Participate in introduction, investigation, and implementation of new procedures and in the evaluation of new instruments.
Requirements
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.
  • Applicants must be able to fulfill non-privileged professional credential requirements.
  • Possess/maintain MT certification by ASCP or any other nationally recognized certifying agency.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Position is designated as Inclement Weather Essential. The incumbent must make every attempt to report for work on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below.

  • Basic Requirement for a Clinical Laboratory Scientist:
    • A. A Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree from a regionally accredited college/university including courses in biological science, chemistry and mathematics, AND successful completion of a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
    • OR
    • B. At least a full 4-year course of study that included 12 months in a college or hospital-based medical technology program or medical technology school approved by a recognized accrediting organization.
    • OR
    • C. A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree from an accredited college/university that included 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of biological science (with one semester in microbiology), 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of chemistry (with one semester in organic or biochemistry), one semester (one quarter) of mathematics, AND five years of full time acceptable clinical laboratory experience in Blood Banking, Chemistry, Hematology, microbiology, Immunology and Urinalysis/Body Fluids.
  • Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing various assays in the blood bank or transfusion section in a clinical laboratory and calibrating or maintaining clinical laboratory instruments.
  • OR
  • Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.
  • OR
  • Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.
Certification Requirement

Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT) or other board or registry deemed comparable by Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD(HA)) or their designee as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) is required.
