Position Overview

POSITION SUMMARY

The Family Support Advocate plays a crucial role within the Youth Mobile Crisis Response (YMCR) Team, delivering essential support services to families and individuals who have faced a behavioral health emergency. Under the guidance of the Clinical Director or designated supervisor, the Family Support Advocate serves as a role model for caregivers, acts as an advocate for consumers, and shares lived experiences related to behavioral health challenges, providing vital information to ensure ongoing stabilization.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist clients in recognizing their strengths, needs, and achievable goals to formulate a comprehensive service plan.
  • Support clients and their families in restoring and enhancing social and interpersonal skills.
  • Identify and strengthen support networks, promote community awareness, and develop effective coping strategies.
  • Teach essential social skills and household management techniques.
  • Help clients recognize and manage triggers that may lead to functional impairments.
  • Ensure appropriate follow-up for individuals post-crisis and facilitate connections to ongoing support services, contributing to community stabilization.
  • Engage in collaborative meetings with Youth Mobile Crisis Response staff and other community stakeholders as necessary.
  • Regularly communicate updates on clients' statuses, including any changes in mood or medical needs.
  • Maintain knowledge of agency and community resources, as well as referral processes.
  • Document all interactions with clients effectively.
  • Provide supportive services and coordinate with community resources based on the established service plan.
  • Participate in supervision, program, and agency-wide meetings as required.
  • Assist with record consultation, review, or auditing as needed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • A minimum of a high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Completion of an LDH/OBH approved peer training program is mandatory prior to providing peer support services, and recognition as a Family Peer Support Specialist (RFPSS) is essential.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) is required.

Additional Requirements:

  • Applicants must be at least 24 years old.
  • Must have personal experience as a primary caregiver for a child with complex needs, including social, emotional, mental health, and/or substance use challenges, or involvement with child welfare or juvenile justice systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Proficiency in additional languages is a plus.
  • Exceptional customer service skills are necessary.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • No restrictions or adverse actions that would disqualify for Medicaid or other billing.
