Position Overview: The Chief of Campus Safety and Security oversees the operational functions of the Safety and Security department, which operates continuously throughout the week. This role involves the development, administration, and evaluation of all safety and security initiatives, programs, and policies. A comprehensive understanding of best practices and national trends in campus safety/security, as well as legal requirements affecting higher education, is essential. The Chief proactively identifies safety and security issues, implements strategic action plans, and ensures the consistent enforcement of relevant policies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure adequate staffing for daily operations and special events.
  • Review, draft, and recommend new policies and procedures as necessary.
  • Act as a liaison between the institution and local emergency services for campus-related responses.
  • Ensure compliance with all governmental regulations, including Clery and VAWA.
  • Prepare and submit the annual Clery report and maintain a daily crime and fire log for public access as mandated by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Assist in investigations related to injuries/accidents, student conduct, and Title IX as required.
  • Approve and monitor all campus safety and security incident reports.
  • Create and maintain first responder manuals for all campus facilities, including floor plans and safety equipment locations.
  • Develop and maintain Emergency Response and Lockdown procedures for all office and classroom areas.
  • Foster collaborative relationships with local, county, and state emergency services.
  • Plan and execute emergency drills and recommend improvements based on outcomes.
  • Represent the institution in the County Emergency Operations Center during county-wide emergencies.
  • Manage the university's emergency alert system.
  • Collaborate with local emergency services and university leadership to maintain the Emergency Response Manual.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Alignment with the institution's mission, vision, and core values, demonstrating a commitment to a Christian lifestyle.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in law enforcement, higher education safety and security, or military service.
  • Bachelor's degree required; a Master's degree in Criminal Justice is preferred, with potential teaching opportunities in the Criminal Justice program.
  • Ability to apply experience, training, and judgment in executing policies and procedures.
  • Proven leadership skills to inspire and guide a team towards achieving objectives.
  • Exceptional communication and customer service abilities.
  • Experience in policy and procedure development.
  • Availability for on-call response during emergencies.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Excel.
  • Prior experience with Incident Reporting software is highly desirable.
  • Maintain certifications in CPR, First Aid, and AED.
  • Familiarity with Haz-Mat Operations and OSHA General Industry standards.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check and drug screening.

Working Relationships: The Chief of Campus Safety and Security is part of the Operations team and reports directly to the Vice President of Operations.

Work Schedule: Flexibility in hours is required for significant departmental or institutional events.
