Special Education Support Specialist

Instructional Aide II for Special Education

Organizational Overview:

Under the guidance of the special education and classroom educators, this role involves assisting in the educational process for both special education and general education students. Responsibilities may differ based on the specific type of special education environment.

o In a special education setting, the aide will support students facing emotional, educational, or behavioral challenges.

o In a severely handicapped special education environment, the aide may assist students with significant physical, emotional, educational, or behavioral needs.

o When integrated into a mainstream classroom, the aide will collaborate with both special education and general education students, as well as their respective teachers.



Key Duties and Responsibilities:
(Depending on assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to the following:)
o Aids in the preparation and distribution of educational materials
o Reinforces lessons delivered by the classroom teacher using various instructional tools
o Works one-on-one or with small groups of students under the teacher's direction
o Assists in grading student work according to established criteria
o Maintains and records student performance data
o Aids in administering standardized assessments
o Participates in staff meetings and training sessions as required
o Provides supervision during outdoor activities for special education students and assists with physical education, field trips, and off-campus learning experiences.
o Oversees student teacher assistants and students involved in specialized programs within the classroom

Qualifications:
o A passion for assisting elementary and middle school students in enhancing their academic, social, and communication abilities
o Basic understanding of English and general educational principles.
o Previous experience in a special education environment is preferred.
o Experience with students in classroom, daycare, playground, or group settings is beneficial.

Skills Required:
o Ability to connect with children and collaborate effectively with staff, parents, and community members in daily tasks
o Maintain confidentiality regarding all student-related matters
o Comprehend and execute oral and written instructions
o Communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents
o Operate necessary instructional and office equipment
o Utilize clerical and computer skills as needed in the classroom setting.
