Position Overview

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor specializing in the Genomics and Physiological Mechanisms of Plant Adaptation to Temperature Stress within the School of Plant and Environmental Sciences (SPES). This tenure-track faculty role is designed for an individual who will establish a prominent and externally funded research program that delves into the genetic and physiological responses of agricultural crops to temperature-related stressors.

Research Focus

The successful candidate will explore various dimensions of plant adaptation to temperature stress, particularly in the context of climate change. Research areas may encompass:

  • Physiological responses of plants to environmental stressors
  • Developmental adaptations in crops
  • Genomic analyses related to stress resilience

Outcomes from this research are expected to identify mechanisms of resilience that can be effectively applied to enhance agricultural productivity.

Collaboration and Teaching

This position emphasizes collaboration with fellow researchers within SPES, Virginia Tech Agricultural Research and Extension Centers, and various academic and industry partners. The incumbent will also be responsible for developing and teaching courses related to plant agriculture and abiotic stress, contributing to the educational mission of the institution.

Community Engagement

Active participation in SPES and CALS committees, community activities, and fostering an inclusive environment is essential. The candidate is expected to maintain an active research agenda and contribute to the overall mission of service to stakeholders.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Ph.D. in plant science, plant genomics, or a closely related field
  • Proven expertise in the genomics and physiological mechanisms of plant stress adaptation
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Commitment to mentoring and promoting diversity and inclusion

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated success in securing research funding and publishing in relevant fields
  • Experience in interdisciplinary collaborative research
  • Prior teaching experience

Appointment Details

This is a regular appointment with a focus on research (80%) and teaching (20%). Salary information will be discussed during the hiring process.
