Software Engineer - Core HR Team

Costco Wholesale is seeking a highly skilled Software Engineer to join our Core HR team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining our Corporate HR applications on SuccessFactors, SAP HCM, and integration with dependent systems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supports release planning activities in conjunction with Product Owners and teams.
  • Identifies high-level requirements to support the definition and refinement of a robust testing strategy.
  • Supports the Product Owner with the identification and definition of enablers/work items to support the architectural runway of a given product/application.
  • Defines non-functional requirements (e.g., performance, security, resiliency, etc.) which support the development of epics and user stories aligned to a value stream.
  • Identifies technical dependencies across several product/application teams to support the implementation of new or enhanced functionality.
  • Performs development, optimization, and automation activities to support the implementation of a product/application.
  • Develops and implements front-end architecture to support user interface concepts.
  • Increases proficiency and understanding of relational and non-relational databases, distributed application architectures, user interfaces and user experience, quality assurance, security concerns, and business value creation.
  • Drives engineering best practices to deliver higher quality and scalable solutions.
  • Provides the team with the development strategy, solution recommendations, and estimates for a given product/application.
  • Participates in scrum ceremonies (sprint planning, retrospective, showcases/demos, stand-ups, backlog refinement, etc.).
  • Creates and executes unit tests which validate the code changes made to support the implementation of a user story.
  • Uses test-driven development (TDD) practices to assist with the detection/recognition of software defects early in the development process.
  • Estimates, plans, and manages all implementation tasks and reports on development progress.
  • Designs, builds, debugs, optimizes, and implements solutions in approved tool sets and databases.
  • Develops high-quality, efficient, and fault-tolerant software.
  • Supports, extends, and builds automated CI and CD pipelines.
  • Designs and delivers DevSecOps automation for app deployment and testing.
  • Uses APM/monitoring tools such as Dynatrace/Splunk and browser tools to perform request purepath/waterfall analysis to identify bottlenecks and suggest improvements.
  • Participates in the development and documentation of department standards and best practices, and mentors junior engineers.
  • Provides the team with solution recommendations and estimates for a given product/application.
  • Identifies deficiencies within a product/application's code base and identifies opportunities to improve overall code quality.
  • Collaborates with team members (e.g., Systems Architects, Systems Analysts) to define project specifications and release documentation for all phases of the product development cycle from product definition to design, through implementation.
  • Conducts peer code reviews for the software changes made by other engineers within a team.
  • Analyzes and develops code that supports our Corporate Solutions HR applications and integrations with Agile methodology.
  • Develops clear, maintainable, modular, and testable code.
  • Develops efficient code in various development languages for enhancements and bug fixes.
  • Creates documentation and functional specifications for applications supported using our standard practices, processes, and procedures.
  • Designs, develops, tests, and deploys software solutions and process flows complying with standards, guidelines, and best practices.
  • Identifies and resolves problems, often anticipating issues before they occur or before they grow, develop and evaluate options, and implement solutions.
  • Performs code reviews, unit testing, and coordinates with development team members on development and QA tasks.
  • Adheres to IS division development standards and deployment processes and procedures.
  • Collaborates with team pod(s), business area, functional team members, and QA to ensure requirements are clearly defined, understood, tested, and documented.
  • Participates in development estimation, deployment, and release planning to ensure delivery of solutions.
  • Responsible for 2nd-level support resolution of daily incident tickets, creation of KB articles for 1st-level support, and providing on-call support.
  • Responsible for continued personal growth in areas of technology, business knowledge, and Costco policies.
Requirements:
  • 5 years' functional and technical design experience.
  • 5 years' programming experience with Java and SQL.
  • 3 years' experience of HR practices or supporting HR applications.
  • Experience designing, developing, and maintaining real-time large-scale business applications.
  • Experience with software development lifecycle methodologies.
  • Database knowledge in a major RDBMS system such as DB2, MS SQL Server, or Oracle.
  • Experience with web services (REST and SOAP).
  • Good problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; including ability to work with all management levels.
  • Explains technologies and solutions to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage priorities and timelines.
  • Good understanding of design/development methodologies and project management concepts.
Recommended:
  • SAP HCM and SuccessFactors Application capabilities and integration.
  • Development experience with Hana Cloud Integration (HCI) (a.k.a. CPI, SCP Integrations).
  • Familiarity with integration tools such as IBM Websphere Broker, SAP PI/PO, Informatica ETL, Axway, and UC4.
