JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Surgical Technologist plays a vital role in the surgical team, assisting in the safe and efficient transportation of patients to and from surgical service areas. This position includes acting as a primary assistant during surgical procedures, adhering to the defined scope of practice, competencies, and skills. Responsibilities include reviewing surgical preference cards to ensure the appropriate selection of supplies and equipment for assigned procedures.

The technologist is accountable for managing supplies and equipment effectively while maintaining a sterile environment. Key tasks involve draping all surgical instruments and equipment in a sterile manner, identifying specimens for the circulating nurse, and performing counts of instruments, sharps, and sponges before, during, and after surgical operations.

Additional duties include cleaning and preparing instruments for sterilization, properly disposing of soiled instruments, and recognizing and reporting any issues that may compromise patient safety. The Surgical Technologist is responsible for safeguarding patient privacy and maintaining confidentiality at all times.

The role also involves maintaining stock levels in Operating Room supply carts, reporting any problems related to surgical kits or equipment, and contributing to the overall cleanliness and organization of the unit. By prioritizing activities related to equipment and instrumentation, the technologist facilitates efficient turnover times for subsequent cases. Ensuring patient comfort and safety is paramount, and the technologist assists surgeons with a high level of efficiency, anticipating both physician and patient needs throughout procedures.

The Surgical Technologist is expected to assist in the daily upkeep of the department, which includes completing assigned tasks, restocking supplies, preparing for upcoming cases, and ensuring all equipment is in optimal working condition. Training and orienting new staff on the appropriate use of instruments and equipment is also a critical component of this role.

Adherence to all procedures for decontaminating, sterilizing, and disinfecting equipment and instruments is essential. The technologist must correctly assemble and package items in an organized and timely manner, operate the autoclave unit effectively, and perform high-level disinfection processes as required.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

Candidates must be graduates of an accredited Surgical Technology program or possess equivalent training from the armed forces. Certification or eligibility for certification is required, with certification to be obtained within six months of hire.

The bonus is intended for external candidates and requires a commitment of 24 months.
