Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Naval Architect to join our team at the United States Fleet Forces Command. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for conducting maintenance program audits and special instructions of drydocking facilities and shipbuilding ways.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct maintenance program audits and special instructions of drydocking facilities and shipbuilding ways.
  • Serve as the NAVSEA representative and team leader for audits/inspections, which include personnel from other U.S. Navy commands and/or contractors.
  • Review Facility Certification Reports and other documentation, such as design changes affecting baseline certification, from participating candidate facilities.
  • Identify technical errors or omissions and ensure compliance with military standards and good engineering practices, and recommend corrective actions or the requirement for additional data from the facilities.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need to have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Experience applying knowledge of principles and practices of naval architecture that enable employee to provide expert advice to headquarters and field personnel in all areas of design and construction.
  • Experience applying knowledge of related fields, such as mechanical and electrical.
  • Experience applying knowledge of drydocking facilities and ship handling systems, and the dry dock certification program.
  • Experience applying a mastery of advanced principles and practices of Naval Architecture in order to investigate and provide consultative services on the entire range of Naval Architecture activities.
Education

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:

(A) Successfully completed a bachelor's degree or higher in engineering.

(B) A Combination of education and experience: college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.

The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following:

  • Professional registration or licensure
  • Written Test
  • Specified academic courses
  • Related curriculum

Additional Information

This announcement uses the Defense Industrial Base, Major Range and Test Facilities direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.

Frequent travel to public/private shipyards requires extended periods of walking, standing, and climbing aboard drydocking facilities, including confined spaces such as tanks and tunnels.

Some work may require a higher security clearance level at which time, the applicant must successfully complete a special background investigation in accordance with security regulations.

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program. Several vacancies may be filled.
