Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Naval Architect to join our team at the United States Fleet Forces Command. As a key member of our organization, you will be responsible for conducting maintenance program audits and special instructions of drydocking facilities and shipbuilding ways.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct audits and inspections of drydocking facilities and shipbuilding ways
  • Review Facility Certification Reports and other documentation
  • Identify technical errors or omissions and ensure compliance with military standards and good engineering practices
  • Recommend corrective actions or additional data from facilities
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at the GS-12 grade level or equivalent in the Federal service or private/public sector.

Experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Applying knowledge of principles and practices of naval architecture
  • Applying knowledge of related fields, such as mechanical and electrical
  • Applying knowledge of drydocking facilities and ship handling systems, and the dry dock certification program
  • Mastery of advanced principles and practices of Naval Architecture
Education

A bachelor's degree or higher in engineering is required. The program must be accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) or include differential and integral calculus and courses in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics:

  • Statics, dynamics
  • Strength of materials (stress-strain relationships)
  • Fluid mechanics, hydraulics
  • Thermodynamics
  • Electrical fields and circuits
  • Nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties)
  • Any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics

Alternatively, a combination of education and experience that furnished a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering and a good understanding of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering is acceptable.

Additional Information

This is a direct hire authority position. The selected candidate will be required to undergo a special background investigation in accordance with security regulations. The position requires frequent travel to public/private shipyards, which may involve extended periods of walking, standing, and climbing aboard drydocking facilities, including confined spaces such as tanks and tunnels.
