The primary objective of this role is to execute maintenance and repair tasks on vehicles and equipment owned by the County, while also providing leadership and training to junior Automotive Technicians.
Key Responsibilities:
Individuals in this position are responsible for leading the most intricate diagnostics and repairs of fleet vehicles, which includes comprehensive engine, transmission, and rear-end work.
They will oversee and coordinate daily work activities of assigned team members, which involves:
- Consulting with supervisors to clarify work assignments and priorities.
- Organizing tasks to ensure timely completion of work.
- Monitoring the progress of ongoing tasks and inspecting completed work.
- Collaborating with colleagues to assist with complex issues and providing technical guidance.
- Facilitating training and instruction for team members on operational procedures and proper equipment usage.
Vehicle Inspections:
Conduct thorough inspections and tests on all vehicle systems, including drivetrain, engine performance, transmission functionality, suspension, steering, brakes, electrical systems, HVAC, and emissions. This includes:
- Completing or modifying work orders for necessary repairs.
- Acquiring required parts for repairs.
- Performing emission tests in accordance with state regulations.
- Inspecting and testing completed repairs and updating necessary records.
Repairs and Maintenance:
Carry out both routine and complex repairs on vehicles by:
- Gathering information from operator reports, fault codes, and diagnostic data.
- Troubleshooting and diagnosing vehicle issues.
- Identifying repair needs and executing the necessary repairs.
- Ensuring that vehicle operation meets specified performance standards.
Preventive Maintenance:
Perform preventive maintenance tasks, which include:
- Checking and replacing fluids.
- Draining and replacing oil.
- Collecting and recovering refrigerants.
- Changing filters and lubricating mechanical components.
- Rotating, mounting, and balancing tires.
- Replacing tires, belts, and hoses.
- Checking and replacing batteries.
- Flushing radiators and conducting tune-ups as required.
Assess the materials needed for projects by:
- Gathering equipment, parts, and supplies.
- Monitoring inventory levels of parts and tools.
- Initiating requests for new or replacement materials.
Utilize various machinery, equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies to complete work assignments, while maintaining a basic mechanics tool kit and/or vehicle-specific maintenance tool sets.
Other related duties may be assigned as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications:
A High School Diploma or GED is required, supplemented by vocational training and four years of experience as an automobile technician, or five years of progressively responsible experience in vehicle mechanical repair. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is acceptable.
Candidates must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and hold or obtain three (3) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications.
This role requires the ability to exert significant physical effort, involving climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, as well as lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling moderately heavy objects (up to 100 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks necessitate the ability to perceive and distinguish colors, sounds, odors, and visual signals, as well as effective oral communication.
Environmental Factors: Performing essential functions may expose the individual to adverse conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, humidity, fumes, noise extremes, hazardous materials, and confined spaces.
