Job Overview

GENERAL FUNCTION:

The Residential Support Specialist plays a crucial role in overseeing the daily activities and program management for individuals with developmental disabilities. This position ensures that all client progress is documented accurately and promptly. The Specialist is responsible for implementing all organizational policies and procedures to safeguard the well-being of clients and the integrity of the facility. The goal is to create a supportive, enjoyable, and healthy environment for all individuals.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High School Diploma or G.E.D. is required.
  2. A minimum of two years of experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities or dual diagnoses. Educational qualifications may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.
  3. A valid driver's license and the ability to maintain insurance coverage throughout employment. Travel may be required using either the agency vehicle or personal vehicle.
  4. Exceptional interpersonal skills are essential.
  5. Must be able to obtain and maintain certifications in CPR, First Aid, PMT, and DDS State Medication Administration.
  6. Physical capability to lift up to 75 pounds and provide necessary physical support to individuals as needed.

ACCOUNTABILITY:

The Residential Support Specialist reports directly to the Residential Manager or an appointed representative.


POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Observe and manage client behavior, implementing appropriate behavior management strategies and documenting all relevant activities.
  2. Maintain accurate logs of all shift activities and incidents, ensuring thorough documentation in the required systems.
  3. Prepare programmatic and statistical reports as necessary.
  4. Ensure the safety, cleanliness, and overall appearance of the living environment, conducting regular inspections and reporting any maintenance needs.
  5. Maintain professionalism in interactions with colleagues, management, and external agencies.
  6. Continuously monitor client locations and adhere to all agency policies and procedures, including medication administration, emergency protocols, and compliance with regulatory standards.
  7. Promptly report any unusual occurrences or issues to the appropriate personnel and complete incident reports as required.
  8. Implement and comply with all legal and programmatic commitments to clients as mandated by relevant state and federal agencies.
  9. Act as an advocate and role model for clients, treating them with dignity and respect.
  10. Assist clients with personal hygiene as necessary.
  11. Document all activities related to client welfare, including movement, incidents, and changes in behavior.
  12. Administer medications according to each client's prescribed schedule and agency guidelines.
  13. Facilitate engaging activities for clients, both within the facility and in the community, tailored to their interests and needs.
  14. Provide support and counseling to clients regarding their progress and challenges.
  15. Assist in safely transporting clients to community events and activities.
  16. Be familiar with and follow emergency procedures for various situations affecting clients.
  17. Support families and guardians in understanding and implementing person-centered planning principles.
  18. Report any violations of client rights to the Executive Director or designated personnel and participate in investigations as needed.
  19. Assist with meal preparation and clean-up during shifts.
  20. Engage in ongoing professional development through training and staff meetings.
  21. Possess a comprehensive understanding of agency policies and procedures.
  22. Perform additional duties as assigned by the Residential Manager or upper management.

EVALUATIONS:

The Residential Support Specialist will undergo evaluations by the Residential Manager at regular intervals to assess performance and development.
