Role Overview: Registered Nurse (Experienced RN) - PRN

Duke University Health System Float Pool – Med/Surg

Location: Various Medical Surgical Units within the Duke University Health System

Duke University Health System is seeking to recruit an experienced Registered Nurse who will embody our mission of Advancing Health Together. Our team is committed to providing outstanding care for each patient to guarantee an exceptional patient experience every time.

The Med-Surg Nursing Float Pool team is responsible for patient care, support, and management of diverse patients across our Medical Surgical units. Nurses in this unit will collaborate within a multidisciplinary team and have the chance to engage in patient rounds.

The typical nurse-to-patient ratio ranges from 1:3 to 1:6, depending on patient acuity, with a dedicated charge nurse and Health Unit Coordinator available 24/7. Nursing Care Assistants are present on the unit from 7a-7p and 7p to 7a.

Ideal candidates will possess a strong commitment to teamwork, demonstrate accountability, and value family-centered care.

Responsibilities

In the Float Pool, our staff are encouraged to "rise to the challenge and adapt to various situations." Through comprehensive training in each area, our staff remain clinical experts, equipped with a broad skill set and knowledge across different patient populations. Unlike other healthcare systems, Duke provides the same benefits to Float Pool staff as those dedicated to specific departments. The Float Pool offers a dynamic opportunity for diverse experiences to advance your career.

As a Clinical Nurse II within Duke University Health System, you will be responsible for planning and delivering professional nursing care for patients in alignment with medical and nursing care plans and established policies and procedures. You will provide nursing services to patients and families according to the scope of practice defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.

  • Plan, deliver, supervise, and document professional nursing care using the nursing process for patients in accordance with physician orders and established protocols. Utilize professional nursing judgment to tailor the care plan based on the assessment of the patient's baseline needs and response to care.
  • Delegate tasks and oversee the activities of other licensed and unlicensed care providers.
  • Assist fellow nursing personnel in delivering nursing care and act as team leader or charge nurse for a designated group of patients or an entire unit as assigned.
  • Monitor and initiate corrective actions to maintain the care environment, including equipment and material resources.
  • Engage in your professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs, and seeking appropriate educational opportunities.
  • Serve as a preceptor and support the development of other staff and formal learners.
  • Participate in identifying clinical or operational performance improvement opportunities and engage in performance improvement initiatives.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Expectations

  • Manage multiple tasks effectively – document assessments, plan of care, interventions, evaluation, and re-evaluation of patient status, assess nursing needs of both acute and chronic patients, independently seek resources, and collaborate effectively. Educate patients and families according to the nursing care plan. Maintain relationships with patients, families, visitors, healthcare teams, physicians, administrators, and leadership.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (or higher) OR Associate's Degree in Nursing OR Nursing Diploma program.
  • A minimum of twelve months of relevant clinical experience is required for Experienced Registered Nurses.
  • All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years of their start date.
