Role Overview
Float Pool Registered Nurse – Med/Surg
Work across Various Medical Surgical Units
Duke University Health System is looking for an experienced Registered Nurse who is dedicated to our mission of Advancing Health Together. Our team is committed to delivering outstanding care to ensure an exceptional patient experience.
The Med-Surg Nursing Float Pool team provides comprehensive patient care, supporting a diverse patient population across our Medical Surgical units. Nurses in this role will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team and participate in patient rounds.
The typical nurse-to-patient ratio ranges from 1:3 to 1:6, depending on patient acuity, with a dedicated charge nurse and Health Unit Coordinator available 24/7. Nursing Care Assistants are present on the unit during designated hours.
Ideal candidates will possess a strong commitment to teamwork, accountability, and a focus on family-centered care.
Responsibilities
In the Float Pool, our staff is trained to adapt and excel in various situations. With extensive training across different areas, our nurses maintain clinical expertise and a broad skill set to serve diverse patient populations. Unlike other healthcare systems, Duke offers equal benefits to Float Pool staff as those dedicated to specific departments. This role provides a dynamic opportunity for varied experiences to enhance your career.
As a Clinical Nurse II at Duke University Health System, you will be responsible for planning and delivering professional nursing care for patients, in alignment with established medical and nursing care plans and protocols. You will provide nursing services to patients and their families, adhering to the scope of practice defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
- Plan, deliver, supervise, and document nursing care using the nursing process in accordance with physician orders and established protocols. Tailor the care plan based on patient assessments and responses.
- Delegate tasks and oversee the activities of both licensed and unlicensed care providers.
- Support other nursing staff in delivering care and take on leadership roles as assigned.
- Monitor and initiate corrective actions to maintain a safe care environment, including managing equipment and resources.
- Engage in professional development by maintaining competencies, identifying learning needs, and pursuing educational opportunities.
- Serve as a preceptor and assist in the development of other staff and learners.
- Identify opportunities for clinical or operational improvements and participate in related activities.
- Perform additional duties as required.
Expectations
- Manage multiple tasks effectively – document assessments, care plans, interventions, and evaluations. Assess the nursing needs of both acute and chronic patients, seek resources independently, and collaborate with the healthcare team. Educate patients and families according to the nursing care plan. Maintain relationships with patients, families, visitors, healthcare professionals, and leadership.
Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher), Associate's Degree in Nursing, or Nursing Diploma program.
- A minimum of twelve months of relevant clinical experience is required for Experienced Registered Nurses.
- Registered nurses without a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (or higher) must enroll in a BSN program within two years of hire and complete it within five years.
Licensure and Certification
- Current registration with the North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse or current compact RN licensure to practice in North Carolina is required.
- BLS Certification is mandatory.
