About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Counselor to join our team at the City of Houston Department of Neighborhoods. As a Counselor, you will play a vital role in providing intervention services to gang-involved students and their families, as well as conducting outreach and response to individuals at high risk for gang involvement.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide intervention services to gang-involved students and their families through case management, counseling, mediation, and mentoring.
  • Perform outreach and response to gang-involved individuals and individuals at high risk for gang involvement.
  • Conduct school and/or home visits to screen and assess referred students and their families.
  • Provide referrals to clients and families for needed social services.
  • Facilitate client/family support groups and conduct intervention sessions for the parents of gang-involved youth.
  • Respond to gang-related incidents at target campuses.
  • Conduct gang prevention and awareness presentations and trainings for students, parents, teachers, school administrators, and community groups.
  • Maintain client folders and documents.
  • Gather and/or collect information to generate reports, activity logs, etc.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a social or behavioral science, such as Sociology, Psychology, Social Work, or Counseling.
  • Two years of professional experience in counseling or related social services work.
  • Master's degree in a social or behavioral science may be substituted for the experience requirement.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who are able to speak, read, and write Spanish and have experience working with high-risk youth/families.
