Role Summary and Requirements

The field of Respiratory Therapy encompasses the evaluation and treatment of patients experiencing both acute and chronic cardiopulmonary issues. Today's Respiratory Care Specialists carry significant responsibilities in patient management and are essential members of the healthcare team. A thorough understanding of the cardiopulmonary system's pathophysiology and the intricate procedures necessary for accurate diagnosis and treatment is essential.

Responsibilities in this role include:

  • Performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as directed by a physician under the supervision of the RT Supervisor or Team Leader.
  • Administering medical gases, conducting aerosol therapy, obtaining and analyzing blood samples, performing patient assessments, operating and maintaining various respiratory and cardiopulmonary devices, providing mechanical ventilation, managing artificial airways, assisting in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, educating patients, and monitoring equipment and patient responses to therapy.
  • Completing necessary documentation for inpatient and departmental records, ensuring equipment cleanliness, and adhering to safety and infection control protocols.

Required qualifications include:

  • An Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited institution.
  • A current Respiratory Therapist license from the State Board for Respiratory Care.
  • NBRC CRT certification.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification to be obtained within six months of employment.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support certification to be obtained within 30 days of employment.
  • NRP certification within six months of hire.
  • One year of recent clinical experience is preferred.
