Job Description

Startech Networks, Inc. is seeking an experienced Data Center Technician to join our team. The successful candidate must possess the knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience requirements outlined below.

Key Responsibilities
  • Cabling and Termination
    • Mount and install racks, patch panels, fiber optic, and hardware.
    • Install grounding for racks, equipment, and cable as required.
  • Testing and Troubleshooting
    • Perform continuity tests on horizontal and riser cable.
    • Use a volt-ohmmeter to troubleshoot opens, crosses, shorts, and transpose pairs on horizontal and riser cable.
    • Use a tone set to identify and correct problems.
  • Fiber Optic Installation
    • Install LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, and MPO/MTP connectors for both multi-mode and single-mode fiber.
    • Terminate simplex and duplex jumper cord.
    • Terminate and breakout outside plant fiber.
    • Terminate indoor tight buffered multimode and single-mode fiber.
    • Install fan-out kits, including buffer tube.
  • Documentation and Administration
    • Complete all paperwork accurately and on time, including timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, and tool transfers.
  • Additional Responsibilities
    • Provide onsite support after business hours as part of an on-call schedule.
    • Travel to various sites as needed.
Testing and Troubleshooting
  • Test using an OTDR, Fluke, and EFXO.
  • Troubleshoot using an OTDR to identify and correct problems end-to-end and network-wide.
Splicing
  • Perform mechanical splicing with all types of fiber cable.
  • Perform fusion splicing with all types of fiber cable.
  • Perform building entrance splices, maintenance space, and direct buried splices.
Physical and Mental Requirements
  • Be self-motivated, positive in approach, professional, and help create, develop, and implement project process improvements.
  • Promote the Company culture and mission to all employees, vendors, clients, and business partners.
  • Be proficient with listed tools.
  • Act as the Company liaison for interface with customer representatives.
  • Possess proven problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills, and the ability to effectively read, write, and give oral presentations.
  • Be able to work at heights, off a ladder, and in confined spaces.
  • Be able to lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds.
  • Be able to see and distinguish different colors, read small print, and hear and recognize audible signals such as dial tones.
Education, Certification, License, and Skill Requirements
  • Possess a High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Be proficient at terminating all connector types and methods for SMF and MMF systems.
  • Have testing and troubleshooting experience with MMF and SMF systems.
  • Prefer 3-5 years of experience in fiber optics.
  • Prefer industry certifications (Corning/FOA/BICSI).
  • Prefer data center installation experience.
  • Prefer mechanical and fusion splice experience.
  • Prefer OSP/confined space entry experience (splicing).
  • Be able to use trade tools, including screwdrivers, torpedo levels, tape measures, snips, pliers, hammers, wrench sets, cable strippers, flashlights, and gloves.
