The Senior Writer for the Alumni Relations and Development department plays a crucial role in enhancing communication strategies, organizing events, and fostering volunteer opportunities that promote engagement among alumni and donors. This position involves proposing, researching, composing, editing, and proofreading both personalized and mass communication materials targeted at alumni and donors. Key projects encompass gift proposals, background documents, newsletters, articles, profile narratives, brochures, event materials, website content, social media posts, video scripts, solicitation letters, and presidential communications.
Key Responsibilities
Enhance Cultivation and Stewardship Efforts (40%)
- Craft, design, and refine tailored proposals and correspondence directed at alumni, donors, and supporters of the institution.
- Develop talking points and background documents that articulate the rationale for various institutional priorities, adaptable for individual proposals and communications. Stay informed about trends and factors that link the institution to broader national and global issues.
- Compose and edit solicitation letters, emails, social media content, and video scripts that encourage contributions to the annual fund, which is vital for academic innovation and resources.
- Collaborate on the creation of printed and digital materials that highlight fundraising initiatives, acknowledge donor contributions, and illustrate the impact of support. Projects may include stewardship reports, brochures, video scripts, and presentations.
Support Alumni Engagement Initiatives (40%)
- Generate strategic and engaging newsletters and digital content, including donor and student profiles, news updates, and case statements. Propose innovative methods to connect with alumni and donors.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues across various departments to produce compelling content.
- Assist in the development of additional printed and digital communications that bolster alumni engagement efforts, including video scripts and event materials.
Manage Special Projects and Editorial Needs (20%)
- Review and refine written materials produced by staff to ensure high quality and consistency.
- Participate in relevant meetings and planning sessions.
- Provide copyediting support for departmental materials as required.
- Uphold and promote the institution's communication strategies and branding standards.
Additional Responsibilities (5%)
Engage in team meetings, task forces, and committees as necessary. Provide support for other staff needs as required. Undertake related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Applicants should possess a Bachelor's degree and a minimum of seven years of demonstrated experience in professional writing, proposal development, or journalism.

Experience in higher education development or public relations is advantageous. Familiarity with digital media and content creation is preferred, along with experience in philanthropy and major gift fundraising.
