POSITION OVERVIEW
The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) provides comprehensive anesthesia care and related services to patients undergoing surgical, obstetric, and pain management procedures. This role involves the application of the nursing process through meticulous assessment, identification of patient needs, and the formulation and execution of a tailored anesthetic care plan. The CRNA is expected to demonstrate advanced critical thinking skills to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality, and age-appropriate anesthesia care.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND EXPERIENCE
- Possession of a valid New Mexico and federal DEA certificate
- Active nursing license in the state of New Mexico
- Graduation from an accredited nurse anesthesia educational program
- Certification as a nurse anesthetist from the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists or its predecessor
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from the AHA
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification from the AHA
- Valid CRNA license in New Mexico
KNOWLEDGE AND COMPETENCIES
- Understanding of the nursing role and scope of practice as outlined by the New Mexico Nurse Practice Act
- Familiarity with the nurse anesthetist role as defined by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA)
- Awareness of contemporary trends and standards in anesthesia care
- Exemplary problem-solving, decision-making, and teamwork abilities
- Commitment to providing exceptional customer service
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
- Basic computer skills, including proficiency in order entry and word processing
- Proficient in using anesthesia delivery equipment, such as anesthesia machines, monitors, IV pumps, and defibrillators
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conducts thorough pre-anesthetic assessments and evaluations, including obtaining informed consent
- Engages with patients to review their medical history and previous anesthesia experiences
- Designs and implements individualized anesthesia care plans
- Reassesses patients immediately before anesthesia induction
- Selects and initiates appropriate anesthetic techniques, including general, regional, or local anesthesia
- Administers anesthetics and related medications to maintain physiological stability
- Utilizes both non-invasive and invasive monitoring techniques to gather and interpret vital data
- Manages airway and respiratory status through various interventions
- Oversees patient recovery from anesthesia, ensuring comfort and safety
- Implements pain management strategies, including pharmacological and regional techniques
- Responds effectively to emergency situations with appropriate interventions
- Continuously assesses and manages the patient's physiological status
- Collaborates with healthcare teams to ensure comprehensive patient care
- Maintains accurate documentation of patient records
- Assists in training and orienting new staff members
- Promotes safety for patients, visitors, and staff
- Upholds confidentiality and respects the rights of all individuals

- Participates in departmental meetings and quality improvement initiatives
- Demonstrates a commitment to ethical practices and compliance with organizational policies
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position requires flexibility in working hours, including potential overtime and on-call responsibilities. The CRNA may encounter exposure to noise and hazardous materials and must be able to manage stress and interruptions effectively.
