Job Summary

The Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University seeks a highly skilled and detail-oriented Collections Assistant to join its team. This is a full-time position based primarily on-campus in Massachusetts.

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing assigned collections storage rooms and assisting in the management, cataloging, organization, rehousing, handling, and movement of Peabody Museum collections. This includes assessing, properly handling, and appropriately housing collections, including Indigenous cultural items.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in museum collection management or registration, with experience working with diverse cultural and archaeological collections. They will be familiar with museum cataloging procedures, inventory methods, object handling, photography, and digital image processing.

The Collections Assistant will work closely with the Collections Manager and other team members to ensure the highest standards of collection care and management. They will also be responsible for maintaining accurate records, performing photographic documentation, and assisting with registration, conservation, documentation, and exhibition of the collections.

This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated and detail-oriented individual to join a dynamic team and contribute to the preservation and promotion of the Peabody Museum's collections.

Responsibilities
  • Manage assigned collections storage rooms and assist in the management, cataloging, organization, rehousing, handling, and movement of Peabody Museum collections.
  • Assess, properly handle, and appropriately house collections, including Indigenous cultural items.
  • Maintain accurate records and perform photographic documentation of collections.
  • Assist with registration, conservation, documentation, and exhibition of the collections.
  • Work closely with the Collections Manager and other team members to ensure the highest standards of collection care and management.
Requirements
  • B.A. in archaeology, anthropology, or museum studies preferred.
  • Two years of museum collection management or registration experience required.
  • Familiarity with museum cataloging procedures, inventory methods, object handling, photography, and digital image processing.
  • Ability to maintain consistent descriptive standards of anthropological collections.
  • Ability to handle fragile and culturally sensitive collections in keeping with museum standards and best practices.
  • Knowledge of and working experience with materials for display and storage of museum collections beneficial.
  • Accuracy, attention to detail, flexibility, and initiative required.
  • Excellent computer skills and familiarity with collections management databases, knowledge of The Museum System (TMS) preferred.
  • Ability to work well on independent and team projects and to work under deadline pressure.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the ethical stewardship of museum collections in partnership with communities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
