Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY

The Lead Tax Strategist is tasked with managing Corporate Income Tax, State Sales Tax, and State Tobacco Tax reporting for both Business to Business (B2B) and Business to Consumer (B2C) entities across the United States. This position acts as a vital business partner for Directors and Managers, providing guidance on regulatory obligations and ensuring adherence to compliance standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Corporate Income Tax

  • Oversee the multi-state PL election and address any organizational changes impacting economic presence, collaborating with external tax advisors to establish Economic Factor for Apportionment.
  • Prepare calculations for current and deferred income tax provisions, including necessary journal entries, tax payable reconciliations, and substantiation of deferred tax assets and liabilities for U.S. jurisdictions. Work closely with Finance to gather year-end trial balances, sales by state, balance sheet reconciliations, and fixed asset roll-forwards.
  • Collaborate with Finance on fixed assets to track additions and retirements, develop and maintain book-to-tax depreciation schedules, and create a tax schedule in SAP.
  • Manage U.S. Consolidation and investment and equity roll-forwards, advising Finance on changes to paid-in capital or dividends.
  • Review Form 1099s prepared by Finance for accuracy and ensure timely filing.
  • Annually update Transfer Pricing Information for U.S. entities, prepare Form 5472, and conduct 263A UNICAP calculations.
  • Oversee the processes for federal and state income tax returns, including returns, estimates, extensions, and audits.
  • Update Accumulated Earnings and Profits (E&P) for dividend considerations.
  • Recruit, train, and mentor team members, fostering an environment of improvement and innovation while providing timely feedback.

State Sales Tax and Tobacco Tax Reporting

  • Utilize state tobacco tax regulations and product profiles to generate tax reports, identify discrepancies, and resolve issues with the software provider.
  • Engage in industry discussions with legal counsel and tax advocates to remain informed on developments affecting remote sellers.
  • Review state tobacco tax and sales tax returns for remote sales on a monthly basis.
  • Collaborate on the rollout of new B2C Retail software and guide the implementation of Avalara for Sales and Tobacco tax, preparing documentation to define tax basis and institutionalize tax requirements.
  • Manage annual Tangible Personal Property Tax Reporting.
  • Stay informed on relevant information and technology to enhance compliance and drive innovation.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Commitment to the Code of Ethics, building and maintaining trust with stakeholders. Exhibit flexibility, maturity, and decisiveness.
  • Strong analytical and organizational capabilities.
  • Comprehensive understanding of business process flows and associated internal controls.
  • Proficiency in Excel, including advanced functions such as VLOOKUP and PivotTables.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Indirectly oversee all employees within the division.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree in accounting with a minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting/tax compliance within a public accounting firm or international organization. A minimum of 5 to 10 years of progressively increasing responsibilities is required. Industry experience is advantageous but not mandatory.
