Job Summary:

The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) is a vital member of the healthcare team at St. Luke's University Health Network. As a PCA, you will provide high-quality patient care, working closely with licensed personnel to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide patient care, including vital signs, intake and output measurements, EKGs, glucometry, phlebotomy, and specimen collection.
  • Follow treatment plans as directed by licensed personnel.
  • Ensure patient comfort and satisfaction with service.
  • Perform patient mobilization using proper body mechanics and assistive devices.
  • Accept responsibility for providing safe, appropriate, and quality patient care.
  • Communicate changes in patients' conditions and unit concerns with the unit-based team.
  • Restock unit supplies as needed.
  • Perform equipment checks and unit-specific maintenance duties as appropriate to the unit.
  • Take an active role in unit-based performance improvement.
  • Maintain awareness of unit budget.
  • Maintain responsibility for own professional development through active participation in in-services and/or continuing education programs, as well as timely completion of competencies.
  • Assist in orienting and educating new staff.

Physical and Sensory Requirements:

The PCA will be required to sit for up to 7 hours per day, stand for up to 10 hours per day, and walk for 6 hours per day. The PCA will also be required to lift, carry, and push objects up to 10 pounds, occasionally lift, carry, and push objects up to 75 pounds, and transport patients weighing up to 400 pounds via wheelchair, bed, and/or stretcher. The PCA must be able to perceive attributes of an object through touch, hear as it relates to normal conversation, and high and low frequencies, and see as it relates to general, near, far, color, and peripheral vision.

Education and Training:

A high school graduate or GED is preferred. Health care specialty training is also preferred. The PCA will participate in an individualized orientation program and obtain BLS certification within 60 days of employment or transfer to position. Basic computer skills are required, and attendance at St. Luke's University Health Network APC and MT courses or evidence of previous training determined through competency testing is expected.
