About the Department:

Student Health Services (SHS) is dedicated to providing comprehensive healthcare services to the student population at George Mason University. The department offers primary care and health promotion services, which include initial assessments, follow-up evaluations, history taking, physical examinations, differential diagnosis, appropriate interventions, consultations, referrals, and basic emergency treatment. Services are also available to faculty, staff, and visitors as needed.

About the Position:

The Administrative Medical Assistant collaborates closely with healthcare professionals to ensure the delivery of high-quality care within the clinic environment. This role involves utilizing clinical and laboratory skills to prepare patients for provider consultations, administer prescribed treatments and medications, perform diagnostic tests, and undertake additional responsibilities as directed by the Executive Director.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Skills: Accurately record patient intake, including vital signs, allergies, and medications. Conduct essential procedures such as ear lavage, EKGs, and basic first aid. Assist healthcare providers during procedures and serve as a chaperone for sensitive examinations. Adhere to OSHA safety protocols, including the handling of biohazard materials. Ensure a safe environment for both staff and patients through proper sterilization of instruments and the cleaning and stocking of supplies. Maintain competency in all clinical skills through participation in orientation, ongoing training, and annual infection control training.

Laboratory Techniques and Safety Practices: Operate and maintain laboratory equipment safely. Conduct CUA waived testing and demonstrate proficiency in phlebotomy while adhering to universal safety precautions. Ensure accuracy in documenting laboratory test results and properly store hazardous materials and cleaning agents. After completing lab orientation, maintain competency in all laboratory procedures.

Immunization Administration: Administer immunizations safely and accurately. Participate in annual safe injection practices training and stay informed through ongoing CDC training. Follow CDC and WHO guidelines for vaccine recommendations and educate patients about required and administered vaccines.

Committee Participation: Actively participate as a member of a SHS committee; attend meetings, follow through on assignments, and contribute to maintaining high-quality healthcare standards.

Required Qualifications:

  • Certification as a Medical Assistant or equivalent training and experience;
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology;
  • Familiarity with Electronic Medical Records;
  • Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel, and Outlook;
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Healthcare Provider BLS certification;
  • Experience in a medical office, hospital, or healthcare setting (typically one year);
  • Experience with Electronic Health Records and Telehealth;
  • Knowledge of the unique needs of college students;
  • Experience in obtaining patient history, vital signs, and chief complaints;
  • Basic knowledge of adolescent and adult immunization requirements;
  • Experience in patient check-in, payment handling, and patient discharge procedures;
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and foster teamwork.
