Job Responsibilities

The Commonwealth of Virginia is looking for a dedicated Maintenance Laborer and Equipment Operator to join our team. This role is essential for maintaining safe and efficient roadways and will involve various tasks related to equipment operation and manual labor.

Key Duties Include:

  • Responding to emergency situations and adverse weather conditions, operating equipment for snow and ice management, and addressing hazardous roadway conditions.
  • Participating in work zone training, setting up work zones, and executing traffic control measures.
  • Implementing proper safety protocols: identifying workplace hazards, utilizing personal protective equipment, and staying updated on safety regulations.
  • Collaborating as part of a team to perform manual labor tasks such as clearing drainage systems, maintaining right-of-way areas, cutting vegetation, patching potholes, and completing various road maintenance projects.
  • Conducting pre-operation inspections of equipment and performing routine maintenance tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered for this position, candidates should possess:

  • Understanding of safety practices, materials, and procedures.
  • Familiarity with highway maintenance techniques and materials.
  • Capability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 50 lbs regularly.
  • Proficiency in using and maintaining a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to work in challenging weather conditions and respond to emergencies outside of regular hours, including nights and weekends.

A valid Driver's License and the ability to travel independently between assigned locations are mandatory.

Preferred Qualifications

Additional desirable qualifications include:

  • Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Experience operating light to medium-duty equipment relevant to roadway and roadside maintenance or construction.
  • Background in performing preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.
  • Experience in emergency response operations, including snow removal, work zone setup, and accident response.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required for this position. This role is designated as essential, meaning all associated duties must be performed during emergencies, including inclement weather and disaster response situations. Flexibility to work outside of standard business hours is essential.
