Department Overview

The Americas Division ("AD") operates within the Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank, Limited, New York Branch, tasked with corporate functions and oversight of U.S. entities. Within the AD, the "Global Banking Unit ("GBU")" and "Global Markets Unit ("GMU")" execute essential business operations. The Credit Investment Management Department ("CIM") is accountable for the management and administration of (i) leveraged loan assets and (ii) structured product assets, including CLOs and MML Senior Financing, adhering to the Branch's lending policies.

Position Overview

This role supports the Co-Head of the Department in steering, strategizing, and overseeing the execution of departmental functions and initiatives, with a primary focus on structured product investments. The position involves recommending objectives, policies, and plans for the department while seeking to enhance efficiency, effectiveness, and productivity. Direct reports may be part of this role.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Collaborates with Co-Heads of the Department to develop and implement business strategies aligned with the Branch's objectives. Guides investment and portfolio management strategies for CIM based on comprehensive market insights, in alignment with Head Office and management.
  2. Assists in managing departmental operations, including employee oversight, updating job descriptions, conducting performance evaluations, and providing compensation recommendations.
  3. Offers expert insights on investment guidelines, evolving circumstances, and portfolio realignment suggestions.
  4. Ensures adherence to investment guidelines.
  5. Facilitates (1) negotiations and interactions with agent banks, arrangers, managers, holders, and brokers for specific assets to identify potential new assets or manage existing portfolio assets, (2) formulates and adjusts the department's sourcing strategy, and (3) fosters business relationships to enhance sourcing opportunities.
  6. Provides credit oversight to analysts and aids in asset selection, individual investments, and disposals based on insights from the department's analysts, in compliance with investment guidelines.
  7. Plans training and career development initiatives for departmental personnel.
  8. Ensures collaboration and consensus with other departments.
  9. Assumes full departmental oversight in the absence of the Department Manager.
  10. Performs all other functions as assigned by management.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  1. MBA or equivalent with over 10 years of experience in lending, or a bachelor's degree in finance or economics with at least 15 years of relevant experience. CFA designation preferred.
  2. In-depth knowledge of modern portfolio theories and techniques utilized by loan asset managers.
  3. Proficient in executing client requests and conducting meetings.
  4. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft 365 (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, and Access).
  5. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  6. Strong understanding of the banking sector, its products and services, particularly in the U.S. credit market and products such as fund finance, HYL, CLO, and MML. Applies specialized knowledge to deliver value-added results.
  7. Contributes to and influences unit revenue generation and profitability, with an understanding of expense impacts on the Bank's financial performance.
  8. Responsible for compliance within the area of responsibility, identifying and understanding risks and regulations pertinent to departmental operations.
  9. Ability to lead a team effectively, providing constructive guidance and feedback for their professional growth.
