POSITION OVERVIEW:


This internship offers a valuable mentorship opportunity for students to apply theoretical knowledge in a dynamic product development and manufacturing setting.

The intern will gain hands-on experience to enhance engineering decision-making skills, gradually taking on more responsibility for design choices, processes, modifications, and adaptations.

Responsibilities may encompass conducting tests, implementing process improvements utilizing 3D modeling and data management systems, compiling and analyzing data, and delivering presentations. Depending on their level of expertise, interns may also have the chance to spearhead individual projects.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Mechanical Engineering

  • Design and evaluate intricate components and assemblies in accordance with relevant standards.
  • Provide technical insights and make decisions that influence adherence to design specifications.
  • Engage in all stages of the design process, from analysis and testing to qualification for market readiness.
  • Collaborate within project teams, lead initiatives, and guide team members' activities.
  • Generate documentation pertinent to the design engineering process, including layout drawings, detailed drawings, assembly instructions, Bills of Materials, Engineering Change Orders, and design records.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory standards throughout the design process.
  • Develop product and component testing specifications while actively contributing to team efforts to gain in-depth product and user knowledge.
Electrical Engineering

  • Conduct research aimed at innovating new products and enhancing existing designs and processes.
  • Acquire insights into the new product development lifecycle by participating in cross-functional teams that include mechanical, software, industrial, tooling, and supply chain disciplines.
  • Assist in the design and evaluation of complex components and control systems according to established standards.
  • Formulate control and testing specifications for components.
  • Participate in all phases of design, including analysis, testing, and qualification for production and public sale.
  • Create documentation related to electrical engineering tasks, including flow charts, wiring diagrams, electronic schematics, source code, hazard assessments, validation test plans, and Bills of Materials, Engineering Change Orders, and design records.
  • Gain exposure to a design process that adheres to FDA regulations, Good Manufacturing Practices, ISO 9001, Underwriters Laboratories Standards, Canadian Standards, IEC-60601, and any future regulations affecting product design.
Manufacturing Engineering

  • Conduct research to enhance manufacturing processes and product designs.
  • Understand plant operations, processes, and equipment by collaborating with various functional areas to improve cost, quality, lead time, and safety.
  • Manage the people, processes, and product aspects of challenges to implement effective solutions.
  • Analyze and plan workspace needs, workflow, and equipment layout for optimal efficiency.
  • Engage in technical writing to develop standardized work instructions.
  • Assist in the design and evaluation of complex components and assemblies to meet applicable standards.
  • Provide technical data for decisions impacting compliance with design specifications.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams.

DAILY TASKS INCLUDE:

attending meetings, engaging in project activities, analyzing problems, preparing technical reports, troubleshooting manufacturing or quality issues, and liaising with internal and external stakeholders.

Software and Firmware Development

  • Develop and maintain Embedded Control System (ECS) software utilizing manufactured hardware.
  • Create and maintain Windows PC software for engineering and production testing stations.
  • Implement both automated and manual software verification and validation testing.
  • Establish control and testing specifications to ensure hardware/software development aligns with design verification in production.
  • Make informed decisions and provide technical data impacting compliance with design specifications.
  • Engage in all phases of design, including analysis, testing, and qualification for production and public sale.
  • Generate documentation related to software engineering tasks.
  • Compile necessary documentation to ensure products can be manufactured as designed.
  • Maintain records of the design process to comply with FDA regulations, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), ISO, Underwriters Laboratories Standards, Canadian Standards, IEC, and any future regulations affecting product design.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

  • Complete engineering change orders.
  • Draft test protocols and reports.
  • Utilize various software tools, including 3D modeling and Microsoft Office.
  • Conduct presentations and report-outs on completed work.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:


Currently enrolled in a 4-year accredited degree program, pursuing a BS in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Electrical, Software Engineering, or a related field.


SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Proficient knowledge and experience in experimental design, problem-solving, Excel, and 3D modeling.
  • Ability to apply technical knowledge to job-related tasks.
  • Demonstrated capacity to independently solve problems and make decisions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
