About Castelion
Castelion is revolutionizing the approach to defense technology development and manufacturing by emphasizing rapid, iterative design processes, swift testing phases, and contemporary commercial production methods for large-scale output. Our mission is to design, construct, and evaluate advanced long-range strike weapon systems, providing the United States and its allies with a strategic advantage and preventing future conflicts.
Senior Power Electronics Engineer
We are in search of a dynamic Senior Power Electronics Engineer to spearhead the design, architecture, and advancement of power systems integral to missile technology. This position entails overseeing both the overarching architecture and intricate design elements, ensuring the delivery of power ranging from several watts to kilowatts across various Castelion missile systems, including high-power radar seeker units, brushless DC motors, digital computing systems, communication devices, energy storage solutions, and additional vehicle components. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with Castelion's engineering leadership to architect designs for upcoming vehicles and ground systems. A qualified individual will possess extensive experience in creating highly manufacturable power electronics hardware with exceptional reliability for mission-critical applications in a fast-paced setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Missile-Level Development: Assume responsibility for the complete power architecture at the missile level. Conduct research and design according to external interface specifications, internal subsystem power forecasts, and expected customer needs. Engage in electrical power system and subsystem design evaluations and establish requirements. Define and execute electrical power system verification testing and analysis. Maintain ownership of essential data products (power tree, sequencing diagrams, fault analyses, etc.) to ensure team alignment regarding power.
- Seeker-Level Development: The seeker subsystem is anticipated to demand the most rigorous power design. Collaborate with the seeker team to create a detailed design that is compliant, cost-effective, feasible, and scalable for manufacturing. Provide engineering expertise in the design, analysis, and testing of DC-DC power converters for challenging environments operating at several kilowatts.
- Battery Development: Investigate potential battery chemistries and present findings to the broader engineering team. Drive Castelion's battery initiatives through all development phases, from research and development to prototyping, mass production, and field performance. Oversee technical design at the cell and pack levels, optimizing for safety, performance, cost, and manufacturability.
- Lead Team in Fast-Paced Environment: Facilitate design reviews and system architecture evaluations for power-related systems. Exhibit a consistent development progress cadence and prototype design cycles every four weeks. Complete design and requirement assessments ahead of production and capture value from high-frequency testing and prototype builds.
- Implement and Manage Castelion Avionics Standards: This includes modeling, PCBA guidelines, derating, and naming conventions. Responsible for establishing quality and reliability standards, including EEE part sourcing and acceptance/qualification testing of your designs.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering
- 5+ years of experience in power converter development
- Prior experience with DC-DC power converter development
- Experience in modeling, simulation, and testing of power electronics
- Experience with high power DC applications (2kW) in compact form factors
- Experience in modeling, simulation, and testing of power electronics.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Missile Experience: Proven ability to design, procure, and integrate flight power systems in missiles, from initial power assessments to large-scale production. Strong understanding of DC-DC topologies, with the capability to select optimal architectures and components. Familiarity with designing for harsh missile environments and relevant military specifications.
- Design for Cost: Demonstrated ability to incorporate cost considerations into both architectural and design decisions, including the total cost of components within a system (part cost, assembly cost, failure rates, reworkability, etc.). Ability to collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to reduce costs.
- Full Life-Cycle Development: Ability to creatively address challenges while balancing multi-disciplinary requirements, assessing risks, and making informed design and development choices. Understanding of electrical schematics and electronics manufacturing to enhance test coverage. Hands-on experience with sizing, installing, and troubleshooting various power components.
Leadership Qualities
Bias to Action and Creative Problem Solving: A strong desire and experience in challenging assumptions that lead to innovative ideas that are effectively implemented. Successfully integrating applicable processes, concepts, and materials from other industries to achieve efficiency improvements. Ability to independently resolve minor development issues without requiring extensive support.
