Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Pharmacy Technician II to join our team at MedStar Health. As a Pharmacy Technician II, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and effective management of medications throughout the hospital.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare and fill routine orders for prescribed medications, restock automated dispensing machines, and repack medications.
  • Compound both sterile and non-sterile medications under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Abide by recommendations from regulatory and advisory groups regarding safe medication principles, including look alike, sound alike, and high alert drugs.
  • Participate in meetings and on committees, representing the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
  • Contribute to the achievement of established department goals and objectives, adhering to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards.
  • Ensure that medications are properly and safely stored throughout the hospital, storing medications under conditions necessary to ensure stability.
  • Refill and replace medications in automated medication dispensing machines throughout the hospital, troubleshooting and servicing as needed.
  • Label all medications and chemicals used to prepare medications with contents, expiration dates, and appropriate warnings.
  • Participate in the evaluation of the hospital's medication management system for risk points and identify areas to improve safety.
  • Safely and accurately prepare all medications in the most ready to administer form, using proper techniques, calculations, and appropriate precautions.
  • Selection and Procurement: Ensure that medications are selected and procured based on departmental criteria, demonstrating a working knowledge of the formulary list and the formulary process.
  • Stores controlled substances in such a manner to prevent diversion in accordance with state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Transports medication to patient care units, placing in the designated delivery locations, within established departmental standards for turnaround times.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Completion of an approved/accredited Pharmacy Technician training program preferred.
  • 1 year 6 months related pharmacy technician experience and hospital environment experience preferred.
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician through the Board of Pharmacy required and Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification within 180 Days required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of drug nomenclature and medical terminology; proficiency in basic mathematics, including fractions and decimals.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.

This position has a hiring range of $19.17 - $31.36.
