Park Laborer - Seasonal Job Description

Decatur Park District is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Park Laborer - Seasonal to join our team. As a Park Laborer - Seasonal, you will be responsible for performing a variety of daily, cyclical, and routine grounds and facility maintenance functions.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain grounds and sports fields through mowing, fertilizing, aerating, grading, seeding, sodding, watering, raking, and policing.
  • Operate trucks, mowers, sod cutters, chain saws, hand and power tools, and other maintenance and mechanical equipment.
  • Prepare beds, plant, trim, prune, mulch, water, weed, stake, fertilize, rake, shovel, dig, backfill, and level soil to complete and maintain grounds and horticultural projects.
  • Assist in the installation, inspection, and repair of playground equipment.
  • Maintain playground areas and equipment.
  • Maintain ball diamonds.
  • Grade, install bases, install drainage, sod, water, top dress, fertilize, aerate, install goals, and perform routine maintenance on athletic fields.
  • Assist with construction projects, including timber and border installation, excavation, drainage installation, structure installation, site furniture assembly and installation, brick paver installation, pavement repair, and concrete pouring and finishing.
  • Polish grounds and pick up and remove trash and debris.
  • Assist in the installation of benches, tables, signs, playgrounds, fencing, pavement, bleachers, lockers, backboards, and other site amenities.
  • Operate tractors, utility trucks, mowing equipment, and small engine-powered equipment.
  • Drive all Park District vehicles (Non-CDL vehicles).
  • Load, unload, and deliver equipment and supplies as needed.
  • Plow, shovel, snow blow, broom, and salt to remove ice and snow.
  • Paint buildings, picnic tables, trash cans, bleachers, poles, grounds, and equipment.
  • Clean floors, windows, walls, carpets, and other areas of Park District buildings.
  • Perform grounds set-ups and clean-ups and remove refuse from buildings and sites.
  • Clean, adjust, and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Clean the work site when projects are completed.
  • Attend work on a regular basis.
  • Perform the job safely and in compliance with District policies, procedures, work, and safety rules, and the employee handbook.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
Requirements:
  • High school graduate or G.E.D.
  • Minimum of three (3) to four (4) years experience in grounds maintenance, general construction, or applicable trade.
  • Or, any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
  • Valid Illinois Class D Driver's License.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification preferred.
Work Environment:

The general work area is outdoors, and frequent exposure to natural and potentially extreme weather conditions while performing job duties. Protective clothing and equipment are required as it pertains to the particular job duty.
