Family Advocate

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Family Advocate to join our team at Henrico County Virginia. The successful candidate will serve as an advocate for all families and children in designated school communities, providing support and resources to enhance their overall parenting skills.
Key Responsibilities- Serve as an advocate for all families and children in designated school communities.
- Assist parents in enhancing their skills through parent education classes, ESL classes, computer and technology classes, and adult classes.
- Identify families and students in need of additional support and work in collaboration with support staff to meet assessed needs.
- Assist parents with transportation to school appointments when applicable.
- Become familiar with program policies and procedures and service area plans.
- Assist with recruitment and enrollment.
- Provide family crisis intervention as needed with assistance of other program staff.
- Identify and connect with community partners to support the school community.
- Organize and facilitate workshops for the purpose of providing information, resources, and support to parents.
- Collaborate with others to promote and ensure the importance of parent involvement with school personnel.
- Communicate with parents, teachers, principals, and community organizations to strengthen parent/school/community relationships.
- Maintain ongoing contact with teaching staff through class visits, email, telephone, etc.
- Conduct and support home visits to enhance appropriate parenting skills related to academic success.
- Actively encourage parents to participate in parent meetings, field trips, etc.
- Encourage parent-initiated school contacts for the purpose of involving the parent as an active participant in their child's education.
- Inform parents of community-based educational opportunities for the purpose of providing additional academic support beyond the regular school day.
- Work with the attendance team to support parents/families with establishing and maintaining regular attendance for their child.
- Participate in staff development activities and professional growth opportunities.
- Support the Family and Community Engagement department with initiatives and outreach as needed.
- Support the initiatives and goals of the designated school community.
A minimum of twenty-four (24) college credit hours in Early Childhood Education, Education or related field and willingness to continue training. A minimum of one (1) year experience working with school age children and parents, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities. A valid Virginia Driver's license. ESL Spanish speaking preferred.
HCPS reserves the right to waive one or more of the listed job requirements when in the best interest of the school system. Additional languages may be considered a plus, particularly if they align with the needs of a school.
