Position Overview

The primary function of this role is to engage in a diverse range of responsibilities within the General Engineering domain, completing developmental tasks and training as outlined in the formal training and development plan.

Key Responsibilities
DUTY 1:

Conducts aerospace engineering activities in support of standard projects or segments of larger initiatives under the mentorship of a senior engineer. The individual is expected to exercise judgment in the independent application of professional methods and techniques acquired through prior learning.

Exhibits proficiency in applying innovative engineering practices, techniques, and methodologies to identify, analyze, and resolve challenges.

This role entails responsibilities related to the integration of aeronautics and astronautics sciences within the expansive fields of aviation and space exploration.

Plans, organizes, directs, and coordinates significant and intricate projects that represent essential components of major operational programs in aeronautics and astronautics, including the adaptation of aerodynamics, computational fluid dynamics, fluid mechanics, flight dynamics, propulsion, thermodynamics, and energy conversion/utilization as they pertain to aerospace vehicles and associated equipment.

Researches, analyzes, and evaluates available options or the feasibility of various advanced approaches to address complex program challenges; defines concepts and criteria for future initiatives or resolves significant controversial issues in current programs.


DUTY 2:

Organizes and executes the collection and analysis of information, data, and standards utilized by the assigned organization to carry out aerospace engineering tasks.

Investigates problems and issues to determine root causes and develops solutions that consider the methodologies and techniques of various engineering disciplines.

Acts as the organization's technical expert in formulating system performance requirements, objectives, and integration, as well as estimating time and resources for system design, development, and support.

Utilizes scientific and engineering principles to design, develop, test, evaluate, and determine requirements, establishing methods and procedures that become standard practices for the organization.

Applies extensive knowledge of aerospace engineering and expert understanding of the assigned subject matter or functional area to resolve unique or novel design and development engineering challenges.

Conducts analysis and integrates technical requirements, directives, and program plans in support of assigned projects/programs in systems engineering. Prepares and reviews detailed specifications, drawings, and supporting documents, evaluates proposals, and presents conclusions and recommendations.


DUTY 3:

Engages in special projects aimed at maximizing the intern's training and development. Such assignments may include developing written summaries and reports for higher-level engineers, contractors, and/or clients; leading teams of colleagues in completing a conventional project; or participating as a team member in large, complex studies.

Utilizes a broad array of engineering manuals, standard publications, and technical materials to gather information, analyze data, and prepare reports.

Recognizing priorities and the urgency of situations, evaluates procedures and employs innovative techniques and methods to achieve objectives.

In support of engineering reviews and/or panels, formulates evaluations and technical justifications regarding feasibility, practicality, and technical soundness. Work may involve the use or development of computer-aided engineering and analysis tools.

Develops, implements, and reviews policies, processes, and procedures of a special or miscellaneous nature that may span multiple engineering disciplines and necessitate the application of relevant principles.

Participates in special projects and initiatives, preparing oral and written reports. Presents briefings or presentations on findings, which may require securing acceptance from senior officials for proposed solutions.


DUTY 4:

Stays informed of emerging technologies and professional advancements to remain current in the field and apply this knowledge to work assignments.

Employs computers and software applications, including analysis tools and project tracking programs, to address engineering challenges and facilitate work.

Serves as the technical authority for the organization, providing status updates and advisory services to superiors on problems, issues, and projects within assigned program areas.

Attends meetings, conferences, briefings, and seminars related to project or program support. Conclusions and recommendations made have a direct impact on management plans and decisions regarding policies and procedures.

Maintains awareness of new technologies and transformative changes in research and development to ensure appropriate emphasis during lifecycle support phases.

Conducts analyses of various systems, relationships, and models, evaluating and/or redefining the impact of new capabilities on existing systems and policies.


Qualifications

Individual Occupational Requirement:

Degree: Engineering.

To be acceptable, the program must lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated based on your level of knowledge, skills, abilities, and/or competencies in the following areas:

  1. Professional knowledge of aerospace engineering policies, theories, principles, and concepts, along with familiarity with other engineering disciplines to execute conventional engineering assignments.
  2. Ability to analyze, interpret, and apply aerospace engineering rules and procedures in various situations and recommend effective solutions to senior engineers.
  3. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  4. Knowledge of computer operations and standard software applications.

Education: If the position has a positive degree requirement or education forms the basis for qualifications, you must submit transcripts with the application. Official transcripts are not required at the time of application; however, if the position has a positive degree requirement, qualifying based on education alone or in combination with experience; transcripts must be verified prior to appointment. An accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education must accredit education.

Foreign Education: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must provide proof that the education credentials have been deemed equivalent to those gained in conventional U.S. education programs.

Additional Information: An additional supervisory probationary period of one year may be required when an employee is officially assigned to a different supervisory position. Current Federal Civilian employees may apply for temporary and term positions, and if selected, a break in service may be required prior to appointment to the position.
