Position Overview:
Amherst College is seeking candidates for the role of Custodian. This is a full-time, year-round position with a starting pay of $18.97 per hour.

The Custodian plays a vital role in the Custodial Services team, ensuring that safe, clean, orderly, and sanitary conditions are upheld throughout the campus.

The primary duties of the Custodian focus on maintaining cleanliness in athletic facilities, including the fitness center, while also providing backup support for the pool area.

The Custodian is expected to take proactive measures to foster a diverse workforce and engage in the College's initiatives aimed at cultivating a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming workplace.


Work Schedule:

This position is classified as essential services, which may require reporting to work or remaining on duty during College closures.

Given the centrality of this role to student life, flexibility in scheduling, including extended shifts, may be necessary.

The work schedule is subject to variation based on the College's operational requirements, typically spanning Monday through Friday.

Key Responsibilities:


Custodial Services: Perform general custodial tasks to maintain safe, clean, orderly, and sanitary conditions in buildings and surrounding areas, adhering to established cleaning routines and methods.

Custodians are responsible for ensuring a clean and organized workspace that complies with all environmental health and safety regulations, including the management of universal and hazardous waste.

Collaborate effectively with a diverse group of colleagues to promote a respectful and inclusive atmosphere. The custodial duties of this position are primarily focused on athletic facilities, including the fitness center and pool.

Projects: Responsibilities include stripping, screening, and refinishing floors, extracting carpets, washing walls, ceilings, and glass, performing snow removal, supporting the campus-wide recycling initiative, and completing monthly work requests, building inspections, and reports on student damages.

Conduct routine repairs on cleaning equipment and address building maintenance issues that do not require a licensed professional.

Event Support: Assist with special services and event support as needed for facilitating events and general logistics on campus.
Campus Stewardship: Custodians serve as the frontline stewards in maintaining the integrity of campus buildings.

They are tasked with cleaning and upkeep, regularly inspecting, monitoring, and reporting maintenance concerns, managing waste, overseeing inventory supplies, and promoting energy conservation by monitoring lighting and electronic usage. Additionally, they communicate and coordinate with students and housing staff regarding issues in residential areas, as well as liaising with academic and administrative personnel about concerns in non-residential buildings.


Qualifications:
Required: A valid driver's license and successful credentialing to operate college vehicles.
Basic math skills, including addition and subtraction.
Basic computer proficiency.
Strong customer service, organizational, and time-management abilities.
Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills, with the capacity to follow both written and verbal instructions.
Commitment to fostering an intentionally inclusive and respectful environment.
Attention to detail.
Successful completion of a criminal offender records information (CORI) check.
Completion of a pre-employment physical and lift test.
Preferred: High School or Vocational Diploma, or equivalent. Six months of cleaning experience.
