The Ivy Street School is a small, year-round private residential special education school that advances equity and access for young people with disabilities. We serve adolescents aged 13-22 who are neurodiverse.
We offer a student-first model driven by collaboration, creativity, and a deep understanding of each child's unique needs. Our multidisciplinary team creates rich experiences that nurture learning, preparing students for adulthood and independent living. Boston serves as our second classroom, where students make meaning and deepen their knowledge.
As an Education Counselor at the Ivy Street School, you will work in a supportive environment that fosters growth and learning. You will collaborate closely with a team that includes Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Special Education Teachers, and Nurses, receiving guidance and mentorship.
We are seeking a creative, empathetic, and adaptable Education Counselor passionate about supporting young people and eager to engage in professional development within the human services field. The ideal candidate believes in the potential of every student and is committed to anti-racism efforts.
In this role, you will support students' progress through implementing IEP goals and therapeutic interventions. You will help students develop skills for greater independence in education, career, and personal development. Working in classrooms with 6-8 students, alongside a multidisciplinary team, you will maintain a safe, therapeutic environment while implementing frameworks like CPI, PBIS, and ARC models.
Key responsibilities include:
- Collaborative Support: Work with the classroom teacher to implement learning programs and provide classroom supervision.
- Therapeutic Environment: Maintain a safe, therapeutic classroom environment and offer individualized support based on students' learning and treatment needs.
- Therapeutic Frameworks: Utilize frameworks such as CPI, PBIS, and the ARC model of Trauma-Informed Care to help students manage daily stressors and behavior challenges.
- Engagement and Relationship Building: Actively engage with students during daily lessons and activities, making learning enjoyable and strengthening relationships.
- Individualized Support: Provide one-on-one assistance in and out of the classroom, ensuring familiarity with each student's IEP goals and working toward their progress.
- Team Collaboration: Collaborate with the classroom team on treatment planning and interdisciplinary collaboration, providing insights on student progress and interventions.
- Documentation: Complete necessary documentation, including daily student progress summaries, incident reports, and communication with families.
- Leadership: Lead group activities, electives, and off-campus trips to help students develop community-based skills.
- Residential Support: Support students in morning routines, including wakeups and breakfast, especially for those in residential programs.
- Crisis Intervention: Participate in crisis intervention as necessary, ensuring student safety and well-being.
- Positive Relationships with Families: Develop and maintain strong, positive relationships with students' families, communicating effectively about progress and needs.
This position requires a high level of professionalism, effective time management, and excellent communication skills. A Bachelor's degree in Special Education or a related field is strongly preferred, but relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. A valid driver's license is preferred, and CPR and First Aid certification are required. Meals are provided during shifts, and free parking is available.
