Position Overview

This role is situated within the Defense Health Agency.

Key Responsibilities

As a Clinical Social Services Specialist, your duties will include:

  • Managing intricate cases involving individuals significantly affected by moderate to severe mental health disorders, including trauma history, co-occurring conditions, and suicidal tendencies.
  • Delivering individual, family, and group therapeutic counseling services utilizing various evidence-based approaches tailored for both adults and children, aimed at helping clients recognize and navigate personal, psychological, and relational challenges, thereby fostering personal, occupational, marital, and familial growth and adaptation.
  • Gathering comprehensive bio-psycho-social data about clients through interviews, case histories, and observational techniques, followed by assessment methods.
  • Evaluating the information collected to establish psychiatric diagnoses, treatment plans, and the necessity for counseling or referrals to other specialists or institutions.
  • Reviewing documentation and information to pinpoint issues and concerns.
  • Consulting relevant resources, such as the latest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM), textbooks, manuals, and journals, to identify symptoms, formulate diagnoses, and devise therapeutic or treatment plans.
  • Providing counseling to clients using approved evidence-based treatment modalities to help them gain insight into personal and relational issues, set goals, and create action plans that reflect their interests, abilities, and needs.
  • Assessing the outcomes of counseling methods to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatments employed.
  • Collaborating with other professionals to discuss therapy or treatment options, as well as new resources or techniques.
  • Offering case management services to effectively oversee patients enrolled in intensive outpatient behavioral programs and to avert crises.
  • Regularly coordinating with various clinics, advocacy programs, substance abuse programs, chaplain services, military commands, social service agencies, educational institutions, and other organizations that support the patient.
  • Taking the initiative to develop inter-agency and interdisciplinary forums where such collaboration is lacking.
  • Continuously evaluating and responding to the evolving needs of patients based on deployment cycles or critical incidents.
  • Implementing performance initiatives through the revision of clinical standards and procedures.
  • Conducting a variety of quality management and assurance tasks to comply with Joint Commission (TJC) standards.
  • Establishing and monitoring objective behavioral outcome measures.
  • Addressing risk management issues and taking appropriate actions.
  • Providing clear documentation of care and recommendations, along with generating reports and approving consults.
  • Exhibiting proficiency in both written and verbal communication, particularly in case formulation and presentation.

Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

Qualifications

Essential Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship is mandatory.
  • This position requires the incumbent to report for duty on time during inclement weather conditions.
  • The incumbent may be required to perform on-call duties, work overtime including weekends and federal holidays, and participate in unscheduled training or emergency situations.
  • Evening, night, rotating shifts, extended hours, or other schedules typical of healthcare operations may be required.
  • This role has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement, and the selected applicant will need to consent to this as a condition of employment.
  • All employees assigned to a medical treatment facility must be screened for applicable immunizations based on occupational risk.
  • This position necessitates credentialing; selected applicants must meet credentialing standards.
  • A valid state license as a clinical social worker is required.
  • The incumbent must pass a pre-employment physical to meet physical effort requirements, and may need to undergo annual physical or medical surveillance examinations.
  • The ability to lift 30 lbs is required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) training certification is necessary, to be obtained within 30 days of employment and maintained thereafter.
