Nursing Supervisor Job Summary

This role is responsible for coordinating total resident care and directing nursing units. The ideal candidate will have advanced training and broad nursing experience, including supervisory duties.

The work requires administrative ability, knowledge of training techniques, and the exercise of initiative and good judgment.

The work is carried out according to standards of professional nursing practices, facility policies, rules and regulations, and State and Federal regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Verify daily staffing and redistribution, as necessary;

2. Collaborate with charge nurses daily to exchange information regarding resident care, resident condition, and all matters affecting resident well-being;

3. Make rounds to assess residents' condition, giving special attention to critically ill residents;

4. Ensure that individual nursing care plans are followed for each resident;

5. Perform medication passes and/or direct resident care as needed;

6. Participate in resident care committee meetings;

7. Reinforce the training and orientation of nursing personnel and provide positive reinforcement;

8. Answer emergencies throughout the shift;

9. Assist in ensuring a safe and sanitary environment for residents, employees, and visitors;

10. Review incident and investigative reports for accuracy and completeness;

11. Monitor meal service on the units and in the dining areas to identify issues requiring intervention;

12. Assist in development and implementation of the nursing facility's Quality Improvement Program;

13. Ensure that residents and families receive the highest quality of service in a caring and compassionate atmosphere;

14. Perform other duties as requested.

Requirements:

1. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and current registration with the professional board of nurse examiners of the state;

2. Experience in the nursing field;

3. Supervisory experience in long-term care is required;

15. Perform other duties as requested.

Skills:

1. Thorough knowledge of nursing theory, techniques, and practices;

2. Thorough knowledge of specialized procedures applied and equipment used in the area to which assigned;

3. Knowledge of dietetic, sanitation, and personal hygiene;

4. Knowledge of medications, their proper dosage, and expected results;

5. Skill in handling and manipulating instruments and equipment;

6. Ability to coordinate and supervise nursing functions in an effective manner;

7. Ability to maintain an empathetic attitude toward residents and to gain their confidence;

8. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions of a technical nature;

9. Ability to recognize and identify symptoms and to make decisions quickly in emergencies;

10. Ability to train subordinates in work procedures and to organize and direct training carried out by members of the staff;

11. Ability to positively interact with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public;

12. Annual verification of a negative TB skin test is required.
