Job Description
The Telecommunications Officer will play a crucial role in ensuring public safety by responding to incoming emergency and non-emergency calls through telephone and the E9-1-1 system. This position involves answering forwarded lines from Public Utilities and Public Works after hours, addressing citizens' requests, and coordinating with necessary crews to provide timely assistance.

In addition to maintaining constant radio communication with emergency service personnel, the Telecommunications Officer will uphold accuracy and confidentiality by maintaining police reports and documenting major offenses and property thefts. Specialized data entry into secured computerized frameworks is also a key responsibility, highlighting the importance of attention to detail and professionalism in supporting the city's safety and operational functions.

This role requires strong computer skills, organizational abilities, and excellent communication skills to effectively interact with the public and emergency service personnel. Timeliness and effective decision-making in alignment with established procedures and policies are also essential qualities for success in this position.

Required Skills and Qualifications
To excel as a Telecommunications Officer, candidates must possess the following skills:

  • Efficiently operate complex computer programs and networking functions, telephone equipment, radios, recording devices, E9-1-1 system, weather systems, and other technical equipment.
  • Ability to learn communications codes and signals.

  • Ability to make decisions in accordance with established procedures and policies.
  • Ability to understand meanings of words and ideas associated with them and to use them effectively.
